Banks sit on record Tk 4 lakh crore surplus funds

Excess liquidity in Bangladesh’s banking sector crossed BDT 4tn for the first time in June 2026, as banks sharply curtailed lending amid soaring loan defaults, weak investment demand and prolonged economic uncertainty.

Bangladesh Bank data show that banks’ surplus funds rose by BDT 1,39,289 crore to BDT 4,08,000 crore in June from BDT 3,27,877 crore in May. The amount stood at BDT 3,77,235 crore in April and BDT 3,78,134 crore in March.
