Jamuna oil’s income surges on higher non-operating income

Jamuna oil showed a 16.72 per cent year-on-year surge in profit to Tk 1.4 billion in its second quarter of FY25 as its interest income escalated.

Earnings per share rose to Tk 12.68 in the second quarter of FY25 from Tk 10.86 in the same period the year before.

Jamuna oil has a huge sum as deposits in banks and financial institutions.

Historically, it has shown lower operating incomes, compared to non-operating incomes, such as bank interest. Recently, its interest income shot up due to interest rate hikes. Hence, EPS went up in Q2 FY25, compared to Q2 FY24.

After the earnings disclosure, the stock of Jamuna oil climbed up 0.91 per cent to Tk 176.70 per share on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). Its current price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is only 3.93, based on the latest income, which is much lower than the industry average of 8.36.

Jamuna oil’s half-yearly (July-December 2024) income surged 30 per cent year-on-year to Tk 2.64 billion.

The state-owned oil distributor markets octane, petrol, diesel, kerosene, furnace oil, bitumen and lubricants in Bangladesh.

Its net operating cash flow per share, a measure of a 9company’s ability to generate cash from its operations, increased to Tk 74.13 per share in H1 FY25 from Tk 8.41 a year ago, owing to lower payment to suppliers.

১১ ব্যাংকের কাছে ৫৩ হাজার কোটি টাকা পাওনা, সংকটে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক

বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক, বর্তমান সরকারের আমলে ১১টি ব্যাংককে মোট ৫৩ হাজার কোটি টাকা ধার দিয়েছে। এই ১১টি ব্যাংক ছিলো বিশাল আর্থিক সংকটে, যার জন্য বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক তাদের সহায়তা করেছে। এসব ব্যাংকগুলোতে ব্যাপক ঋণ জালিয়াতি এবং লুটপাটের অভিযোগ রয়েছে, বিশেষ করে আওয়ামী লীগ সরকারের সময়ে। এর ফলে ব্যাংকগুলো এখন তারল্য সংকটে ভুগছে, এবং বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের মাধ্যমে এই সমস্যা সমাধান করা হয়েছে।

গত সরকারের আমলে বিশেষ করে ২০২২ সালের শেষের দিকে ব্যাংকগুলো থেকে গ্রাহক অর্থ তোলা শুরু হওয়ার পর পরিস্থিতি আরও অবনতির দিকে চলে যায়। তবে, ব্যাংকগুলোকে সহায়তা দেওয়ার জন্য বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক তিনটি প্রধান পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করেছে: টাকা ছাপানো, গ্যারান্টির বিপরীতে ঋণ, এবং চলতি হিসাবে ঘাটতি পূরণের মাধ্যমে।

সর্বোচ্চ পরিমাণ সহায়তা পেয়েছে ফার্স্ট সিকিউরিটি ইসলামী ব্যাংক, যার কাছে ৭ হাজার ২৭০ কোটি টাকা চলতি হিসাবে ঘাটতির বিপরীতে, ১ হাজার ৫০ কোটি টাকা গ্যারান্টি এবং ৫ হাজার ৫০০ কোটি টাকা ছাপিয়ে দেওয়া হয়েছে। এছাড়া, অন্যান্য ব্যাংকগুলোকেও প্রয়োজনীয় সহায়তা দেওয়া হয়েছে, যেমন সোশ্যাল ইসলামী ব্যাংক, ইসলামী ব্যাংক, ন্যাশনাল ব্যাংক ইত্যাদি।

 

ব্যাংকগুলোর জন্য এই সহায়তা নেওয়ার পরও তা যথেষ্ট নয়, এবং ব্যাংকগুলো এখনও সংকট কাটাতে সক্ষম হয়নি। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক এখন পরিস্থিতি মনিটর করছে এবং প্রয়োজন হলে হস্তক্ষেপ করবে।

নতুন মুদ্রানীতি ঘোষণা করেছে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক

নীতি সুদহার অপরিবর্তিতত রেখে নতুন মুদ্রানীতি ঘোষণা করেছে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক। সোমবার (১০ ফেব্রুয়ারি) বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের সভাকক্ষে গভর্নর ড. আহসান এইচ মনসুর জানুয়ারি-জুন সময়ের জন্য আগাম মুদ্রানীতি ঘোষণা করেন।অনুষ্ঠানের শুরুতেই ডেপুটি গভর্নর ড. হাবিবুর রহমান মুদ্রানীতির ওপর একটি উপস্থাপনা তুলে ধরেন।

বাংলাদেশের আর্থিক ব্যবস্থাপনা ও মুদ্রানীতি একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় যা দেশের অভ্যন্তরীণ ঋণ, মুদ্রা সরবরাহ, অভ্যন্তরীণ ও বৈদেশিক সম্পদ সম্পর্কিত পরিকল্পনা নির্ধারণে সহায়ক। কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংক প্রতি বছর দুইবার (জানুয়ারি-জুন এবং জুলাই-ডিসেম্বর) মুদ্রানীতি ঘোষণা করে। চলতি অর্থবছরের জন্য মূল্যস্ফীতি ৭ থেকে ৮ শতাংশে নামানোর লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ করা হয়েছে, যদিও বর্তমানে মূল্যস্ফীতি ১০ শতাংশের কাছাকাছি।

নতুন মুদ্রানীতিতে বেসরকারি খাতের ঋণের প্রবৃদ্ধি আগের মতো রাখা হয়েছে। গত ডিসেম্বরে বেসরকারি ঋণের প্রবৃদ্ধি ছিল ৭.২৮ শতাংশ, আর আগামী জুনের মধ্যে এটি ৯.৮ শতাংশে পৌঁছানোর লক্ষ্যমাত্রা রাখা হয়েছে। অন্যদিকে, সরকারি খাতের ঋণের প্রবৃদ্ধি ১৮.১০ শতাংশে পৌঁছেছিল, এবং নতুন মুদ্রানীতিতে এটি ১৭.৫০ শতাংশে সীমাবদ্ধ রাখা হয়েছে। কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংক ঘোষণা করেছে যে, নতুন মুদ্রা ছাপিয়ে অর্থ সরবরাহ বাড়ানো হবে না।

রিজার্ভ মানির প্রবৃদ্ধি কমানোর লক্ষ্যও নির্ধারণ করা হয়েছে। গত জুনে এটি ছিল ৭.৯ শতাংশ, এবং ডিসেম্বরে এটি ২ শতাংশে নামানোর লক্ষ্য ঠিক করা হয়। আগামী জুন পর্যন্ত এটি আরও কমিয়ে ১ শতাংশে আনার পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে।

২০২৪-২৫ অর্থবছরের বাজেটের আকার ৭ লাখ ৯৭ হাজার কোটি টাকা নির্ধারণ করা হয়েছে, যার ঘাটতি ২ লাখ ৫১ হাজার ৬০০ কোটি টাকা। এই ঘাটতি পূরণে প্রধান ভরসাস্থল হিসেবে ব্যাংক খাত বেছে নেওয়া হয়েছে, যেখানে ১ লাখ ৩৭ হাজার ৫০০ কোটি টাকার ব্যাংক ঋণ নেওয়ার লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ করা হয়েছে।

প্রথমার্ধে মূল্যস্ফীতি, বিনিময় হার স্থিতিশীলতা এবং রিজার্ভ বৃদ্ধি চ্যালেঞ্জ হিসেবে উল্লেখ করা হয়। জুনে কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকের মুদ্রানীতি ঘোষণা না দিয়ে ওয়েবসাইটে প্রকাশ করা হয়েছিল। এ সময় তৎকালীন গভর্নর আব্দুর রউফ তালুকদার, ব্যাংক খাতে অনিয়মের তথ্য আড়াল করার চেষ্টা করেছিলেন। ৫ আগস্ট পলাতক অবস্থায় তিনি ইমেইলে পদত্যাগ করেন।

বর্তমান গভর্নর ড. আহসান এইচ মনসুর দায়িত্ব নেওয়ার পর সুদহার বৃদ্ধি করা হয়। তবে, মূল্যস্ফীতি কিছুটা কমে যাওয়ায় আপাতত সুদহার বাড়ানো হবে না। ব্যবসায়ীরা সুদহার কমানোর দাবিতে সরব থাকলেও, সরকার সুদহার বাড়ানোর কোনো পরিকল্পনা আপাতত নেই।

অন্তর্বর্তীকালীন সরকারের প্রথম ছয় মাসে অর্থনীতি কিছুটা স্থিতিশীল হয়েছে। বৈদেশিক মুদ্রার রিজার্ভ কমতে থাকলেও বর্তমানে এটি ২০ বিলিয়ন ডলারে স্থিতিশীল রয়েছে। চলতি বছরের জানুয়ারিতে মূল্যস্ফীতি কিছুটা কমে ৯.৯৪ শতাংশে নেমেছে, যা আগের মাসে ছিল ১০.৮৯ শতাংশ।

এছাড়া, ডলার স্থিতিশীল থাকার খবর পাওয়া গেছে এবং এর দাম ১২২ থেকে ১২৪ টাকার মধ্যে রয়েছে, যা ইতিবাচক প্রবণতা হিসাবে দেখা হচ্ছে।

Garment shipment to the US increased by 0.75% to $7.34 billion

Garment export to the US has grown year-on-year in 2024 after a gap of two years as the sales of apparel in the American market is increasing with the easing of high inflationary pressure.

Last year, meaning from January to December, Bangladesh’s garment export to the US grew by 0.75 percent to $7.34 billion, according to data from the US Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA).

Bangladesh’s garment export to the US had been decreasing from the severe fallouts of the Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war.

But, in recent months, garment export to the US, Bangladesh’s single largest export destination, was showcasing resilience in shipments, and finally it came to the positive territory in December last year.

The country also experienced a 4.86 percent growth in export volume.

However, similar to the overall market trend, Bangladesh faced a 3.94 percent decline in unit price, which has had a direct impact on profitability.

Last year, the US’s overall import of apparel grew by 1.71 percent to $77.92 billion, the data said.

ACI logs Tk291cr loss in Shwapno, foods, plastics, healthcare in H1

ACI Limited’s pre-tax loss rose by 15% year-on-year to Tk291.42 crore in its retail chain Shwapno, as well as its foods, consumer plastics, and healthcare businesses during the July-December period of FY25.

However, the conglomerate posted a pre-tax profit of Tk306 crore from its pharmaceuticals, animal health, consumer brands, crop care and public health, motors, pure flour, salt, and flexible packaging segments, up from Tk 246.49 crore a year earlier.

These businesses operate under 12 subsidiaries of Advanced Chemical Industries (ACI) Limited, in which the company holds majority stakes, according to its financial statement.  

Despite this, ACI incurred a net consolidated loss of Tk70 crore in the first half of FY25, primarily driven by a 43% increase in interest payments due to rising policy rates. Its consolidated loss per share was reported at Tk7.99.  

During the July-December period, the group’s total revenue reached Tk6,619 crore, up from Tk6,244 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year, reflecting 6% growth.  

In its financial statement, the company reported that for the half-year period ending on 31 December 2024, the group achieved 6% revenue growth, driven by several business segments.  

 

During this period, growth in gross profit outpaced the increase in operating expenses, thanks to effective cost control measures that contributed to an improvement in operating profit.  

However, the cost of borrowing rose due to higher interest rates, coupled with additional funding for working capital and strategic investments aimed at supporting business growth. This led to the incurred loss, as stated in the report.  

 

As of December, ACI’s total short-term loans amounted to Tk5,663 crore, while long-term loans stood at Tk 564 crore.  

Segment-wise performance  

ACI Limited demonstrated mixed financial performance across its diverse business sectors during the first half.  

 

The motor business emerged as the highest revenue contributor, generating Tk1,699 crore with 10% growth in the sector. However, profit before tax in this segment dropped by 16%, standing at Tk109.89 crore.  

ACI operates its motor business through its subsidiary, ACI Motors Limited, in which ACI Limited holds a 48.10% stake. ACI Motors engages in buying, selling, importing, and assembling vehicles for both agricultural and non-agricultural use.  

The company also has a distribution agreement with India Yamaha Motor Private Ltd to sell and distribute Yamaha brand motorcycles and parts in Bangladesh.  

Shwapno experienced 17% revenue growth, earning Tk1,234 crore during the period. Despite this, the segment reported a significant pre-tax loss of Tk126 crore.  

The pharmaceuticals segment reported revenues of Tk874 crore, a 6% increase compared to Tk821 crore in the same period of the previous year. Profit before tax in this segment jumped 55%, reaching Tk86.65 crore.  

In other sectors, the conglomerate generated the following revenues: Tk271 crore from animal health, Tk524 crore from consumer brands, Tk227 crore from crop care and public health, Tk370 crore from pure flour, Tk140 crore from salt, Tk487 crore from foods, Tk321 crore from flexible packaging, Tk150 crore from consumer plastics, and Tk81 crore from healthcare.  

The healthcare segment was the most loss-making business, incurring a pre-tax loss of Tk143 crore. Additionally, the foods and consumer plastics segments also reported losses during the first half.  

Stock performance of ACI  

The company’s share ended 0.34% higher at Tk147.70 on Thursday at the Dhaka bourse. Its market capitalisation stood at Tk1,294 crore.  

For FY24, the company paid a 20% cash dividend and a 15% stock dividend, compared to 40% cash in the previous year.  

It incurred a consolidated loss of Tk160 crore in FY24, extending its loss-making trend for the second consecutive year.  

ACI Limited was incorporated on 24 January 1973 as ICI Bangladesh Manufacturers Limited and was listed on the stock exchanges in 1976.

বিএসআরএমের রড উৎপাদন সক্ষমতা বেড়ে এখন ২৪ লাখ টন

ইস্পাত খাতের শীর্ষস্থানীয় কোম্পানি বিএসআরএম গ্রুপের বার্ষিক রড উৎপাদনক্ষমতা ৬ লাখ টন বেড়ে ২৪ লাখ টনে উন্নীত হয়েছে। গত ১ ফেব্রুয়ারি মিরসরাইয়ে নিজস্ব শিল্পাঞ্চলে নতুন কারখানা চালুর ফলে কোম্পানিটির উৎপাদনক্ষমতা বেড়েছে। তাতে বাজার হিস্যায় বিএসআরএমের আধিপত্য আরও বাড়বে।

রড উৎপাদনের মধ্যবর্তী কাঁচামাল বিলেটের উৎপাদনক্ষমতার সম্প্রসারণ ঘটেছে নতুন কারখানায়। এতে বছরে বিলেট উৎপাদনক্ষমতাও বেড়ে ২৪ লাখ টনে উন্নীত হয়েছে কোম্পানিটির। এর মানে, মধ্যবর্তী কাঁচামাল উৎপাদনেও স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ হয়েছে কোম্পানিটি।

দেশের পুঁজিবাজারে তালিকাভুক্ত বিএসআরএম গ্রুপের দুটি কোম্পানি হলো বিএসআরএম স্টিলস লিমিটেড এবং বাংলাদেশ স্টিল রি-রোলিং মিলস লিমিটেড। নতুন কারখানাটি বিএসআরএম স্টিলসের।

নতুন কারখানায় বাংলাদেশে প্রথমবারের মতো তৈরি হচ্ছে তারজাতীয় রড, যা ওয়্যার রড নামে পরিচিত। নাট, বল্টু, স্ক্রু, ঝালাই করার উপকরণ, যন্ত্রাংশসহ বিভিন্ন পণ্য তৈরির মধ্যবর্তী কাঁচামাল হিসেবে ওয়্যার রড ব্যবহার করা হয়। নতুন এই পণ্য আগে শতভাগ আমদানি–নির্ভর ছিল। এই কারখানা চালুর পর আমদানি–নির্ভরতা ধারাবাহিকভাবে কমবে বলে আশা করা হচ্ছে।

জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ডের (এনবিআর) হিসাবে দেখা গেছে, ২০২৪ সালে ১১৪টি কোম্পানি মোট ১ লাখ ৬০ হাজার টন ওয়্যার রড আমদানি করেছে। এতে বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা ব্যয় হয়েছে ৯ কোটি ৮৫ লাখ মার্কিন ডলার। ওয়্যার রড আমদানিকারকদের মধ্যে বিএসআরএম গ্রুপের কোম্পানি বিএসআরএম ওয়্যারস লিমিটেডও রয়েছে।

—বিএসআরএম সব সময় গুণগত মানসম্পন্ন পণ্য বাজারজাত করে। এরই ধারাবাহিকতায় আন্তর্জাতিক মানসম্পন্ন রড এবং প্রথমবারের মতো ওয়্যার রড তৈরি হবে নতুন কারখানায়। এটি পুরোদমে চালু হলে ওয়্যার রডের আমদানি–নির্ভরতা কমবে।

বিএসআরএম গ্রুপ জানায়, তাদের নতুন কারখানায় ৫ লাখ টন রড এবং ১ লাখ টন ওয়্যার রড উৎপাদন করা হবে।

বিএসআরএম স্টিলসের নতুন কারখানাটিতে ১০ কোটি ৮০ লাখ ডলার বা প্রায় ১ হাজার ৩০০ কোটি টাকা ঋণসহায়তা দিয়েছে দেশি-বিদেশি বিভিন্ন সংস্থা ও ব্যাংক। এর মধ্যে সর্বোচ্চ ৫ কোটি ডলার বা ৬০০ কোটি টাকা ঋণসহায়তা দিয়েছে জাপান ইন্টারন্যাশনাল কো-অপারেশন এজেন্সি (জাইকা)। তা ছাড়া ঋণ দিয়েছে এক্সিম ব্যাংক অব ইন্ডিয়া, স্ট্যান্ডার্ড চার্টার্ড (এসসিবি) বাংলাদেশ ও স্থানীয় ব্র্যাক ব্যাংক।

পরিবেশবান্ধব কারখানা হিসেবে এতে অর্থায়ন করেছে জাইকা। যেমন কারখানায় পরিচ্ছন্ন বাতাস নিঃসরণ নিশ্চিত করতে আধুনিক এয়ার পলিউশন কন্ট্রোল (এপিসি) ব্যবস্থা এবং পানির শতভাগ পুনর্ব্যবহার নিশ্চিত করতে ওয়াটার ট্রিটমেন্ট অ্যান্ড রিসাইক্লিং ফ্যাসিলিটিসহ সর্বাধুনিক পরিবেশবান্ধব প্রযুক্তি ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। এ ছাড়া কারখানার ছাদে স্থাপিত সৌরবিদ্যুৎ প্ল্যান্ট ও জ্বালানিসাশ্রয়ী উৎপাদনপদ্ধতির কারণে প্রতিবছর ১০ হাজার টন গ্রিনহাউস গ্যাস (কার্বন ডাই-অক্সাইডের মতো) নিঃসরণ কম হবে। জাইকা জানায়, বিএসআরএমের প্রকল্পটি তাদের বেসরকারি খাতে বিনিয়োগ অর্থায়ন কর্মসূচির আওতায় দেওয়া প্রথম করপোরেট ঋণ।

জানতে চাইলে বিএসআরএম গ্রুপের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক (এমডি) আমের আলীহুসাইন বলেন, দেশের মানুষ এখন পণ্যের গুণগতমান নিয়ে সচেতন। বিএসআরএম সব সময় গুণগতমানের পণ্য বাজারজাত করে। এরই ধারাবাহিকতায় আন্তর্জাতিক মানসম্পন্ন রড এবং প্রথমবারের মতো ওয়্যার রড তৈরি হবে নতুন কারখানায়। এটি পুরোদমে চালু হলে ওয়্যার রডে আমদানি–নির্ভরতা কমবে। এতে বৈদেশিক মুদ্রার সাশ্রয় হবে।

আমের আলীহুসাইন আরও বলেন, বাংলাদেশে বেসরকারি খাতে প্রথমবার বিনিয়োগ করেছে জাপানি সংস্থা জাইকা। এতে দেশে বেসরকারি খাতে জাইকার বিনিয়োগের দরজা খুলে গেছে। দেশের জন্য গর্বের এই কারখানা।

উৎপাদনক্ষমতায় দ্বিতীয়, বাজার হিস্যায় প্রথম

১৯৫২ সালে যাত্রা শুরুর পর থেকে এককভাবে বিএসআরএম গ্রুপ রড উৎপাদনক্ষমতা ও বাজার হিস্যায় শীর্ষ স্থানে অবস্থান করে আসছিল। এবার ছয় লাখ টন রড তৈরির নতুন কারখানা চালু হলেও গ্রুপটি উৎপাদনক্ষমতায় দ্বিতীয় অবস্থানে রয়েছে। কারণ, দীর্ঘদিন দ্বিতীয় স্থানে থাকা আবুল খায়ের গ্রুপ গত জানুয়ারিতে তাদের বার্ষিক রড উৎপাদনক্ষমতা ১৮ লাখ টন বাড়িয়ে ৩০ লাখ টনে উন্নীত করেছে। ফলে তারা এখন এক নম্বরে আছে।

তবে উৎপাদনক্ষমতা যা–ই হোক, এখন পর্যন্ত বাজার হিস্যায় সবচেয়ে এগিয়ে বিএসআরএম গ্রুপ। শেয়ারবাজারে তালিকাভুক্ত গ্রুপটির দুই কোম্পানির বার্ষিক প্রতিবেদন অনুযায়ী, গত অর্থবছরে উভয় প্রতিষ্ঠান মোট ১৮ লাখ ১৪ হাজার টন রড উৎপাদন করেছে। আর রড বিক্রি হয়েছে ১৭ লাখ ৩৯ হাজার টন। অন্যদিকে আবুল খায়ের গ্রুপের স্টিল কোম্পানি একেএস(আবুল খায়ের স্টিল) শেয়ারবাজারে তালিকাভুক্ত না হওয়ায় তাদের প্রকৃত চিত্র পাওয়া যায়নি।

তবে কোম্পানিগুলোর কাঁচামাল আমদানির হিসাব থেকেও বাজার হিস্যা সম্পর্কে ধারণা করা যায়। যেমন শেষ ২০২৪ সালে দেশে রড তৈরির কাঁচামাল আমদানি হয়েছে মোট ৫৬ লাখ ৩৬ হাজার টন। এর মধ্যে বিএসআরএম গ্রুপ কাঁচামাল আমদানি করেছে ১৮ লাখ ৭৬ হাজার টন বা ৩৩ শতাংশ। এ ক্ষেত্রে আবুল খায়ের গ্রুপের অবস্থান দ্বিতীয়। তারা ১১ লাখ টনের মতো কাঁচামাল এনেছে, যা মোট আমদানির ১৯ শতাংশ।

তৃতীয় অবস্থানে থাকা জিপিএইচ ইস্পাতের আমদানি সাত লাখ টন। চতুর্থ অবস্থানে আছে কেএসআরএম গ্রুপ। তারা আমদানি করেছে ছয় লাখ টন। রড তৈরির এসব কাঁচামাল গলিয়ে ৯০ থেকে ৯৫ শতাংশ রড ও সমজাতীয় পণ্য তৈরি হয়। এর বাইরে জাহাজ ভাঙা ইয়ার্ড থেকে এবং স্থানীয়ভাবে কাঁচামাল সংগ্রহ করে কোম্পানিগুলো, যা পরিমাণে খুবই কম।

সামনে নতুন প্রকল্প

দেশের বাজারে রডের চাহিদা আগের তুলনায় কমেছে। এর কারণ, অর্থনৈতিক কর্মকাণ্ডের স্থবিরতা। তারপরও কোম্পানিগুলো নতুন বিনিয়োগ অব্যাহত রেখেছে। বিএসআরএম গ্রুপের সদ্য চালু হওয়া কারখানাটির নির্মাণকাজ অবশ্য শুরু হয়েছিল ২০২২ সালে।

এ নিয়ে বিএসআরএম গ্রুপের এমডি আমের আলীহুসাইন প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, তিন বছর আগে যখন এই প্রকল্পের পরিকল্পনা হচ্ছিল, তখন দেশের জিডিপির প্রবৃদ্ধির পূর্বাভাস ভালো ছিল। এখন সাময়িকভাবে অর্থনৈতিক কর্মকাণ্ড কমলেও এই অবস্থা সামনে থাকবে না। অর্থনৈতিক কর্মকাণ্ড বাড়বে। চাহিদাও বাড়বে। তিনি আরও বলেন, ইস্পাত খাতে বিএসআরএম ধারাবাহিকভাবে বিনিয়োগ করে আসছে। সামনে মিরসরাই অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চলেও বিনিয়োগের পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে।    https://www.prothomalo.com/business/xbsw8wv991

BAT to pay 3-year-high dividends as dollar crisis lessens

Having paid a decade-low dividend last year, British American Tobacco (BAT) Bangladesh has decided to provide three-year-high dividends for 2024.

With a 150 per cent final dividend declared for the year on Thursday, it is going to pay 300 per cent cash dividends for the year.

The dividends amount to nearly 98 per cent of the profit earned after tax in the year, including a 150 per cent interim cash dividend already paid.

However, the cigarette manufacturer’s earnings per share (EPS) stood at Tk 32.42 for 2024, down from Tk 33.11 the year before, according to a stock exchange filing on Thursday.

Investors will get Tk 30 per share from earnings of Tk 32.42 per share during the year.

At present, BAT Bangladesh’s total number of shares is 540 million. That means the tobacco manufacturer will disburse Tk 16.20 billion in dividend to its shareholders.

Due to higher dividend declaration, BAT’s dividend yield went up to 8.58 per cent for 2024, highest since 2009, when its dividend yield was 9.54 per cent.

The return on investment promised by the company is likely to regain confidence of shareholders who were unhappy with the cash dividends paid for 2023.

Multinational companies are decelerating higher-than-expected dividends for 2024 as the dollar crisis eased to some extent.

Recently, Grameenphone declared record 330 per cent cash dividends for 2024 after paying a 13-year-low dividend for 2023.

Most multinational companies provided low dividends for 2023 despite consistent financial performance as it was difficult to repatriate dividends due to the dollar crisis.

Presently, the dollar crisis lessened, encouraging multinational companies to go for high dividends.

The tobacco leader made a profit of Tk 17.51 billion in 2024, a 2 percent drop from the previous year.

The company earned a lower profit this year, compared to the previous year, due to higher finance expenses and lower leaf exports.

It managed to offset some of the costs by increasing sale prices but failed to maintain profit growth amid rising inflation and higher finance expenses, said an official of the company, requesting not to be named.

BAT Bangladesh will hold its annual general meeting (AGM) on March 25. The record date for entitlement of the dividends is February 26.

The net operating cash flow per share, a measure of the company’s ability to generate cash from its operations, jumped to 32.07 per share in 2024 from Tk 18.90 per share a year ago, mainly for higher collection.

The net asset value, which refers to the excess of total assets over total liabilities, reached Tk 106.88 per share, up from Tk 99.33 per share in December 2023.

The company is yet to disclose the annual revenue for 2024. Its nine-month gross revenue grew 5 per cent year-on-year to Tk 308.4 billion in the period through September last year.

Company secretary Syed Afzal Hossain could not be reached for comments.

BAT Bangladesh has secured a steady business growth in domestic sales as factors, such as high inflation and price hikes, could not stop the buying habits of smokers, market analysts say.

There is also a huge scope of cigarette and tobacco leaf exports to the international market, while the domestic demand has also been growing. Keeping pace with that, BAT has been expanding capacity every year.

The tobacco manufacturer invested Tk 283.8 million last month to increase production capacity to meet the growing demand for cigarettes.

BAT Bangladesh has invested more than Tk 12 billion in phases in the past four years to enhance its production capacity.

BAT markets various brands namely Benson & Hedges, John Player Gold Leaf, Capstan, Star, Royals, Lucky Strike, Derby, Pilot, Flag and Hollywood.

BAT has factories located in Dhaka and Savar, a green leaf threshing plant in Kushtia, and a green leaf re-drying plant in Manikganj.

Retail investors of BEXIMCO likely to return empty-handed

General shareholders of BEXIMCO are likely to lose their investment in the company after the closure of its business units, which used to generate 80 per cent of its revenue.

The company experienced a loss of Tk 358.79 million in FY24 and is now struggling to pay off workers’ wages.

Meanwhile, the government has been trying to facilitate the settlement of workers’ dues worth Tk 5-5.5 billion. As part of the efforts, the labour ministry has recently disbursed a loan worth Tk 99.11 million to the company, according to a letter sent to the Central Depository Bangladesh Limited (CDBL).

In the letter, the labour ministry asked the CDBL to freeze 3 million shares of BEXIMCO owners against the loan. The shares will remain frozen until the repayment of the borrowed cash.

If the company is forced to liquidate assets to pay off the remaining dues, shareholders will be left with nothing as they are at the bottom of the payees.

General shareholders have a 33.03 per cent stake in BEXIMCO while institutes have 32.92 per cent shares, sponsor-directors 33.11 per cent and foreign investors 0.94 per cent, according to the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE).

“The company’s present situation does not hold out hope for shareholders,” said Md. Ashequr Rahman, managing director of Midway Securities.

The government is only trying to help pay off workers’ wages, he said, but operations of the company stalled in the absence of working capital. BEXIMCO is not in a position to resume operations and the situation is likely to deteriorate over time, added Mr Rahman.

Financial distress facing BEXIMCO

On Tuesday, BEXIMCO announced another round of layoffs, citing a lack of work orders, which affected nearly 8,000 workers across five manufacturing units in its industrial park in Gazipur.

The company officially issued a notice, saying the decision was effective from Wednesday at Beximco Yarn-2, Textiles, Denim, Knitting, and RR Washing.

“We are not receiving any work orders, which left us with no choice but to declare layoffs,” said Mohammad Asad Ullah, chief financial officer of Beximco Group.

The latest development comes a week after the interim government announced its decision to sell shares of Beximco Group’s two profitable concerns — Beximco Pharmaceuticals and Shinepukur Ceramics — to pay the salaries of laid-off employees.

The group earlier laid off nearly 30,000 workers across 16 units due to a persistent shortage of orders in its export-oriented garment and textile factories in Gazipur.

The hardship surfaced after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government when the conglomerate, a large loan defaulter; and its vice chairman Salman F Rahman were brought under the regulatory scrutiny.

Salman F Rahman, who had served as private sector adviser to the former prime minister, got arrested in August last year.

Beximco Group reportedly has more than Tk 400 billion in loans, including Tk 285.44 billion taken by its 32 textile and apparel subsidiaries.

Of the 32 units, 16 exist on paper. But the factories were shown as collateral while taking loans, said Labour and Employment Adviser M Sakhawat Hossain at a press briefing last week.

A large amount of the loans have been classified.

Due to the acute liquidity crisis from October last year, production at 24 units inside the industrial park came to a halt.

Why is BEXIMCO in trouble after Hasina’s fall?

Preferring anonymity, a top official of BEXIMCO said the RMG units that announced layoffs on Tuesday had exported goods worth around $50-60 million a month and they accounted for more than half of BEXIMCO’s revenue.

After the ouster of Hasina’s government, the Group started facing difficulties in securing new letters of credit (LC) for raw material imports as banks showed reluctance in providing fresh funds.

While reporting losses for FY24 and the first half of FY25, the company said production remained almost shut due to the non availability of banking facilities during the periods.

“No bank opened any LC from August 2024,” said the company in its earnings notes.

Moreover, stocks of fabrics & yarns, which could not be used, had to be sold at low prices incurring a loss, said the company.

BEXIMCO reported a loss of Tk 358.8 million for FY24 and a loss of Tk 3.56 billion for the first half of FY25, thanks to a sharp decline in revenue.

A bigger chunk of the half-yearly loss — Tk 2.43 billion – was endured in the second quarter through December last year.

Steel, cement makers witness drop in Q2 profits

Reasons include higher raw material costs, lower govt spending

Major listed construction-related firms witnessed a massive year-on-year drop in profits during the October-December period of the current fiscal year of 2024-25.

This was mainly due to a rise in raw material costs and a drop in government spending on infrastructure projects amid macroeconomic challenges.

Among the eight major listed steel rod, cement, and ceramic producers, only Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited saw a rise in profits.

BSRM Steels Limited, BSRM Ltd, and GPH Ispat Limited—all rod producers—experienced a drop in profit.

Among the cement producers, the profits of Crown Cement PLC and Premier Cement Mills PLC also declined, while Meghna Cement Mills PLC sank into losses.

RAK Ceramics registered lower profits during the same three-month period.

Despite higher sales, these companies saw a decline in profits mainly due to lower margins, said Kamrul Islam, executive director of GPH Ispat Limited.

In particular, finance costs soared as the banking sector raised interest rates, leading to lower profits. On top of that, labour costs also increased, he said.

Although sales returned to their previous level in the second quarter of this fiscal year, they were impacted in the first quarter due to nationwide political movements and sluggish government expenditure, he added.

GPH Ispat Limited’s profits dropped 29 percent to Tk 24 crore in the second quarter, while its sales grew slightly to Tk 1,678 crore.

BSRM Ltd and BSRM Steels Limited saw their profits drop by 40 percent and 16 percent, respectively, over the three-month period.

Since construction-related companies require huge investments, they have high leverage with banks. As a result, their profits are affected when interest rates rise, said a researcher at a leading brokerage house.

The three steel rod companies’ combined bank loans exceed Tk 10,000 crore. Consequently, their net finance costs rose by around 8 percent to Tk 302 crore.

Meanwhile, Crown Cement PLC’s profits halved to Tk 18 crore in the second quarter, even as its sales rose by 12 percent to Tk 920 crore.

Due to high inflationary pressure, people’s spending on construction declined, which impacted the high growth of sales for construction-related goods producers, according to a stockbroker.

Crown Cement PLC stated in its disclosure that its profit dropped due to additional depreciation resulting from an expansion of its capacity and the impact of interest charged on long-term loans taken for the expansion.

A hike in electricity prices and an increase in investment in advertising and manpower in efforts to expand its market share also raised costs, it added.

Premier Cement Mills PLC’s profits also fell by 90 percent to Tk 2 crore, while Meghna Cement Mills PLC sank into losses of Tk 29 crore, despite logging a profit of Tk 94 lakh in the same quarter of the previous year.

According to Meghna Cement Mills PLC, it was unable to open a letter of credit (LC) on time due to a significant US dollar crisis and several days of general holidays caused by political unrest.

When it attempted to open an LC, banks demanded a 120 percent margin, meaning the company had to pay a high amount upfront for importing raw materials, it said.

At the same time, the interest rate increased from 9 percent to 14.50 percent, and the price of raw materials rose significantly, resulting in decreased profits, it said.

During the period, sales collections declined amid high inflation and a challenging economic situation, impacting the company’s cash flow, it added.

In the second quarter, only Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited’s profits rose slightly to Tk 88 crore, compared to Tk 79 crore in the same period of the previous year.

পূবালী ব্যাংকের শত শত কোটি টাকা আত্মসাৎ ও বিদেশে পাচারের অভিযোগ অনুসন্ধানে নেমেছে দুর্নীতি দমন কমিশন (দুদক)। ব্যাংকটির চেয়ারম্যান মঞ্জুরুর রহমান এবং ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক ও প্রধান নির্বাহী মোহাম্মদ আলীর নেতৃত্বে শক্তিশালী একটি দুষ্টচক্র এই অপকর্মে জড়িত বলে অভিযোগ পেয়েছে সংস্থাটি। ডেল্টা লাইফের ২৯০০ কোটি টাকা আত্মসাতের অভিযোগ একই চক্রের বিরুদ্ধে। এজন্য প্রতিষ্ঠানটির ডেটাবেজ সার্ভারের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সব তথ্য মুছে ফেলার অভিযোগও আছে। সিন্ডিকেটের মাধ্যমে ব্যাংকের অন্তত পাঁচ পরিচালকের সমন্বয়ে গড়া চক্রটি দীর্ঘদিন ধরে নানা কায়দায় লুটপাট চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে। চক্রের সদস্যদের জিজ্ঞাসাবাদের জন্য দু-একদিনের মধ্যেই তলবি নোটিশ পাঠানো হবে। দুদক সূত্রে এসব তথ্য জানা গেছে।

এদিকে ব্যাংকটির দুষ্টচক্রের বিরুদ্ধে পৃথক তদন্তে নেমেছে বাংলাদেশ ফিন্যান্সিয়াল ইন্টেলিজেন্স ইউনিট (বিএফআইইউ)। সংস্থাটির একজন যুগ্মপরিচালকের নেতৃত্বে ঋণ বিতরণে অনিয়ম, ডলার কারসাজি, অর্থ পাচার, নিয়োগে অনিয়ম, বিভিন্ন বন্ধকি সম্পত্তি স্বল্পদামে বিক্রিসহ বিভিন্ন অভিযোগ খতিয়ে দেখছে তারা। তবে চক্রটি অবৈধ প্রভাব খাটিয়ে দুদক ও বিএফআইইউ-এর অনুসন্ধান ও তদন্ত ধামাচাপা দেওয়ার অপচেষ্টা করছে বলে অভিযোগ পাওয়া গেছে।

দুদক থেকে প্রাপ্ত নথিপত্রে দেখা যায়, গত সেপ্টেম্বরে জনৈক ফরহাদ হোসেন পূবালী ব্যাংকের চেয়ারম্যান মো. মঞ্জুরুর রহমান ও ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক মোহম্মদ আলী চক্রের বিরুদ্ধে একটি লিখিত অভিযোগ জমা দেন। সেখানে ব্যাংকটির সাবেক চেয়ারম্যান ও আওয়ামী লীগের সাবেক সংসদ-সদস্য হাফিজ আহমেদ মজুমদার, পরিচালক ফাহিম আহমেদ ফারুক ও অপর পরিচালক খবিরুজ্জামান ইয়াকুবের বিরুদ্ধে সুনির্দিষ্ট অভিযোগ উত্থাপন করা হয়েছে। যাচাই-বাছাই শেষে অভিযোগটি আমলে নিয়ে অনুসন্ধান করে প্রতিবেদন দাখিলের নির্দেশ দেয় কমিশন। দুদকের সমন্বিত জেলা কার্যালয় ঢাকা-১-এর সহকারী পরিচালক মো. হাফিজুর রহমানকে অনুসন্ধান কর্মকর্তা নিয়োগ দেওয়া হয়েছে।

জানতে চাইলে দুদকের উপপরিচালক মো. আখতার হোসেন বলেন, অভিযোগ জমার পর তা আমলে নিয়ে অনুসন্ধানকাজ শুরু হয়েছে। বিধি মোতাবেক অনুসন্ধান কর্মকর্তা অভিযোগসংশ্লিষ্টদের জিজ্ঞাসাবাদ করবেন। অনুসন্ধান শেষে প্রতিবেদন অনুযায়ী পরবর্তী আইনি ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হবে।

জানা যায়, পূবালী ব্যাংকের বিরুদ্ধে উত্থাপিত অভিযোগগুলোর মধ্যে রয়েছে ব্যাংকটিতে পতিত আওয়ামী লীগ সরকারের ছত্রছায়ায় একটি শক্তিশালী চক্র ব্যাপক অনিয়ম, নিয়োগ বাণিজ্য, ভয়াবহ ধরনের ডলার কারসাজি, সম্পত্তি বিক্রি, ঋণ বিতরণে অনিয়মসহ নানা দুর্নীতিতে জড়িয়ে পড়েছে। বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা ক্রয়-বিক্রয় বাণিজ্যের আড়ালে রহস্যজনক অর্থ লেনদেন হচ্ছে। এ সংক্রান্ত বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের একটি তদন্ত ইতঃপূর্বে ক্ষমতার দাপটে বন্ধ করে দেওয়া হয়েছে। অভিযোগ আছে-পূবালী ব্যাংকের দুষ্টচক্রের অন্যতম সদস্য মোহাম্মদ আলী। যিনি দীর্ঘদিন ব্যাংকটিতে এমডি ও সিইও পদে আছেন। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের সাবেক ডেপুটি গভর্নর সাইদুর রহমান এবং এস কে সুরের সহযোগিতায় চক্রের সদস্যরা ব্যাংকটিকে লুটপাটের আখড়ায় পরিণত করেন। ২০২৩ সালে ব্যাংকটির একটি চক্র ডলার কারসাজির মাধ্যমে বিপুল অর্থ লুট করে নেয়। বিভিন্ন এক্সচেঞ্জ হাউজ থেকে ডলার কিনে ২১১ কোটি টাকা বেশি ব্যয় বা আত্মসাৎ করেছে। মঞ্জুরুর রহমান ও মোহাম্মদ আলী চক্র কিছুদিন আগে হযরত শাহজালাল আন্তর্জাতিক বিমানবন্দরে প্রবাসীদের এক্সচেঞ্জ করা শত শত কোটি টাকার বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা ব্যাংকিং চ্যানেলে না দিয়ে বিদেশে পাচার করে। সম্প্রতি বিমানবন্দরে দুদকের এনফোর্সমেন্ট টিমের অভিযানেও এই অর্থ পাচারের প্রমাণ পাওয়া যায়।

 

দুদকের কাছে তথ্য আছে, ব্যাংকটির বর্তমান চেয়ারম্যান মঞ্জুরুর রহমান ডেল্টা লাইফ ইন্স্যুরেন্স কোম্পানির ২৫ লাখ গ্রাহকের আমানতের ১ হাজার ১৪১ কোটি টাকা আত্মসাৎ করেছেন। পূবালী ব্যাংকের অন্যতম অংশীদার ডেল্টা লাইফ ইন্সুরেন্স। মঞ্জুর রহমান ডেল্টা লাইফে তার চার সন্তানকে পরিচালক পদে নিয়োগ করেছেন। মঞ্জুরের কন্যা আদিবা রহমানকে প্রধান নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তার পদ দিয়েছেন। ডেল্টা লাইফ ইন্স্যুরেন্সের হাজার হাজার কোটি টাকা লোপাট করে তিনি আওয়ামী লীগ সরকারের ছত্রছায়ায় থেকে পূবালী ব্যাংকেও লুটপাট অব্যাহত রাখেন। ডেল্টা লাইফ ইন্স্যুরেন্স পূবালী ব্যাংকের শেয়ারধারী হিসাবে পরিচালক হয়েছিলেন মঞ্জুর রহমান। ডেল্টা লাইফের ২ হাজার ৯০০ কোটি টাকা আত্মসাতের জন্য প্রতিষ্ঠানটির ডেটাবেজ সার্ভারের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সব তথ্য মুছে ফেলার অভিযোগ রয়েছে মঞ্জুরুর রহমানের বিরুদ্ধে। এসব তথ্য সম্পর্কে জানতে সংশ্লিষ্টদের দুদকে তলব করা হবে। দালিলিক প্রমাণপত্র সংগ্রহের কাজও চলছে।

এছাড়া পূবালী ব্যাংকের সাবেক চেয়ারম্যান হাফিজ আহমেদ মজুমদারের বিরুদ্ধেও বিশদ অভিযোগ রয়েছে দুদকের হাতে। তিনি চেয়ারম্যান থাকাকালে অনিয়ম-জালিয়াতির দায়ে ১০ পরিচালককে সরানোর নির্দেশ দিয়েছে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক। ব্যাংকিং নিয়মনীতির তোয়াক্কা না করে মঞ্জুরুর রহমানের আগে প্রায় এক যুগ পূবালী ব্যাংকের চেয়ারম্যানের পদ আঁকড়ে ছিলেন হাফিজ। পতিত আওয়ামী লীগ সরকারের ক্ষমতার জোরে ব্যাংক কোম্পানি আইন আর বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের বিভিন্ন নির্দেশনাকে উপেক্ষা করে কয়েকজন দীর্ঘদিন পরিচালক পদে আছেন। ছাত্র-জনতার গণ-অভ্যুত্থানে সাবেক প্রধানমন্ত্রী পদত্যাগ করে দেশ ছেড়ে পালানোর পর ব্যাংকটির সাবেক চেয়ারম্যান ও সাবেক সংসদ-সদস্য হাফিজ আহমেদ মজুমদারও আত্মগোপনে চলে যান। এছাড়া ভাইস চেয়ারম্যান হাবিবুর রহমান, পরিচালক ফাহিম আহমেদ ফারুক চৌধুরী ও এম খাবিরুজ্জামান ইয়াকুবসহ কয়েকজন এই সিন্ডিকেটে জড়িত বলে দুদকে জমা নথিতে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে। অভিযোগে আরও বলা হয়, সাবেক সংসদ-সদস্য হাফিজ আহমেদ মজুমদার বর্তমানে ডেল্টা লাইফ ইন্স্যুরেন্সের চেয়ারম্যান। তার আগে চেয়ারম্যান ছিলেন মঞ্জরুর রহমান। তারা দুজনই প্রায় দেড় যুগ ধরে পূবালী ব্যাংক ও ডেল্টা লাইফ ইন্স্যুরেন্সের চেয়ারম্যানের পদ দখল করে শত শত কোটি টাকা লোপাট করেছেন। সাবেক চেয়ারম্যান ও সাবেক সংসদ-সদস্য হাফিজ আহমেদ মজুমদার আত্মগোপনে থাকায় তার সঙ্গে কথা বলা সম্ভব হয়নি।

পূবালী ব্যাংকের তদন্তের বিষয়ে জানতে চাইলে বাংলাদেশ ফিন্যান্সিয়াল ইন্টেলিজেন্স ইউনিটের (বিএফআইইউ) প্রধান এএফএম শাহীনুল ইসলাম বলেন, বিষয়টি নিয়ে তদন্ত চলমান। তদন্তের আগে আর কিছু বলতে পারব না।

অভিযোগ সম্পর্কে জানতে চাইলে পূবালী ব্যাংকের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক ও সিইও মোহাম্মদ আলী মোবাইল ফোনে যুগান্তরকে বলেন, ‘আমরা কোনো ধরনের দুর্নীতির সঙ্গে জড়িত নই। স্বার্থান্বেসী একটি মহল আমাদের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ দায়ের করে হয়রানির অপচেষ্টা করছে। আমাদের ব্যাংক সব ধরনের নিয়মকানুন মেনে পরিচালিত হয়। কোনো ধরনের অনিয়ম-দুর্নীতির সঙ্গে আমরা জড়িত নই। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক থেকে নিয়মিত তদন্তে আমাদের বিরুদ্ধে কখনো কোনো অনিয়ম পায়নি।’ দুদকের অনুসন্ধানের বিষয়ে জানতে চাইলে তিনি বলেন, ‘অনুসন্ধান কমিটি গঠনের কথা আমরা জেনেছি। তবে তারা আমাদের কাছে এখনো কোনো তথ্য চায়নি। তারা আমাদের কাছে কোনো তথ্য চাইলে অবশ্যই তা সরবরাহ করা হবে।’ বক্তব্যের জন্য বিভিন্নভাবে চেষ্টা করেও ব্যাংকের চেয়ারম্যান মঞ্জুরুর রহমানের সঙ্গে কথা বলা সম্ভব হয়নি।https://www.jugantor.com/tp-lastpage/913269
