Beximco Pharma profit grows 29% in FY24

Meanwhile, the drug maker recommended a 40% cash dividend for its shareholders for FY24, compared to a 35% cash dividend paid for FY23.

In a meeting held today (28 October), the company’s board of directors approved the financials for the year ending 30 June 2024, and recommended the dividend.

In FY23, its profit was Tk452.44 crore. Its earnings per share (EPS) stood at Tk13.07 in FY24, up from Tk10.28 in FY23.

In price-sensitive information (PSI) regarding significant deviation, the company said double-digit sales growth, lower finance costs, Synovia Pharma’s transition to profit from the previous year’s loss, coupled with a reduced effective tax rate for the subsidiary companies, helped increase earnings per share.

The annual general meeting is scheduled for 29 December through virtual platform and to identify its shareholders, the record date has been fixed for 25 November.

Singer Bangladesh reports Tk 18.54 crore loss in Q3

Singer Bangladesh Ltd reported a loss of Tk 18.54 crore for the July-September quarter of 2024.

As a result, the company posted a loss per share of Tk 1.86 in the third quarter, compared to positive earnings per share (EPS) of Tk 0.88 during the same quarter in 2023.

“While turnover increased by 8.4 percent during the year, gross profit margin fell by 2.2 percent compared to Q3 2023”, said Singer in its un-audited financial statements.

Singer attributed several factors to the decline, including a surge in the sales of lower-margin trade goods, impacted by the ongoing foreign exchange crisis, and higher discounts and promotional expenses aimed at boosting sales.

The company also highlighted that changes in its product and sales channel mix further pressured margins.

Over the first nine months of 2024, Singer’s EPS dropped a staggering 92 percent year-on-year to Tk 0.51, according to a disclosure on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) website.

Singer also noted a sharp increase in advertising and promotional spending during the quarter, which it expects to deliver returns in Q4 and beyond.

Operating profit dropped 31.4 percent year-on-year in Q3 of 2024, as rising costs in several areas, such as shop operations, rent, bad debts, and factory maintenance weighed on earnings, the company mentioned in its un-audited financial statements.

A significant factor behind the company’s increased financial strain was its soaring finance costs, which surged by 103 percent year-on-year in the third quarter, observed Singer in the disclosure.

The company also reported negative net operating cash flow per share (NOCFPS) of Tk 7.36 for the January-September 2024 period, compared to a positive Tk 8.17 during the same period last year.

Singer attributed this decline to higher supplier payments, lower-than-expected sales collections, and slower credit recovery from dealers, all of which strained its cash flow.

Square Pharma posts record profit, declares 110pc cash dividend

Square Pharmaceuticals, the largest drug maker in the country, posted a record profit of Tk 20.92 billion for FY’24, driven by record sales.

Based on the record consolidated net profit, the company also declared the highest ever cash dividend — 110 per cent — for the same fiscal year.

Year on year, the drug maker registered a 10.26 per cent profit growth. The consolidated net profit was Tk 18.98 billion in FY’23.

The company’s expanded distribution network and higher sales volume boosted its revenue, resulting in record profit growth in FY’24, said a senior official of the company.

The board of directors of the company declared the record cash dividend at a meeting on Wednesday. It paid out 105 per cent cash dividend for FY’23 and 100 per cent cash dividend for FY’22.

Company officials said that they expected to see higher profits, but the rise in dollar rates slightly dampened their earnings. They had to purchase dollars at rates as high as Tk 117 in FY’24, compared to Tk 82 at the beginning of FY’23.

A senior official of the company said they, however, were able to maintain their profit growth by enhancing their field forces and distribution mechanism.

As a result, the company’s selling and distribution expenses increased by around 20 per cent, he said.

Also, the cost of goods sold increased by 12 per cent year-on-year to Tk 37 billion in FY’24.

The official said the company’s persistent financial strength, distinct strategic approach and the dedicated efforts of the employees also played an important role in reporting their profit growth.

In FY’24, Square Pharma’s revenue rose 12 per cent to Tk 70 billion.

Its consolidated net asset value per share stood at Tk 142.05 for FY’24 as against Tk 129.95 in the previous fiscal year.

The consolidated net operating cash flow per share (NOCFPS) rose to Tk 20.90 in FY’24, up from Tk 9.64 in the previous fiscal year.

The increase in NOCFPS was attributed to the company’s improved collection efforts against sales during the reported year.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the company’s board of directors also approved a proposal for BMRE (Balancing, Modernization, Rehabilitation, and Expansion) and the purchase of capital machinery and land for future expansion, with an aggregate cost of Tk 5 billion.

The annual general meeting of the company will be held on December 18 while the record date for entitlement of dividend is on November 21.

Square Pharma has seen a surge in demand for its products in recent times. To meet this increased demand and introduce new products, the company has entered into manufacturing contracts with local firms such as Aristopharma, Euro Pharma, Renata Oncology and Apex Pharma.

Though Square Pharma’s business mainly focuses on the local market, it has expanded a foothold in the export market too, having supplied drugs to well-regulated markets, such as the US and the EU nations.

Square Pharma has already set up its plant in Kenya at an export processing zone in Nairobi in 2018, and went into commercial production at the beginning of last year.

Square Pharma is the second largest market-cap listed firm after Grameenphone and total market-cap stood at Tk 199 billion as of Wednesday.

Its stock price on the Dhaka Stock Exchange closed at Tk 224.50 on Wednesday, up 0.13 per cent from the previous session. thefinancialexpress.com

লাফার্জের অন্তর্বর্তী লভ্যাংশ ঘোষণা

পুঁজিবাজারে তালিকাভুক্ত সিমেন্ট খাতের কোম্পানি লাফার্জহোলসিম বাংলাদেশ পিএলসি অন্তর্বর্তী লভ্যাংশ ঘোষণা করেছে। কোম্পানিটি শেয়ারহোল্ডারদেরকে অন্তর্বর্তী হিসেবে ১৯ শতাংশ নগদ লভ্যাংশ দেবে।

গত ৩০ সেপ্টেম্বর, ২০২৪ তারিখে সমাপ্ত অর্ধবার্ষিক আর্থিক প্রতিবেদন পর্যালোচনা করে সোমবার (২১ অক্টোবর) অনুষ্ঠিত কোম্পানিটির পরিচালনা পর্ষদের বৈঠকে লভ্যাংশের এই সিদ্ধান্ত হয়েছে।

কোম্পানি সূত্রে এই তথ্য জানা গেছে।

অন্তর্বর্তী লভ্যাংশের জন্য রেকর্ড তারিখ নির্ধারণ করা হয়েছে ১১ নভেম্বর। অর্থাৎ ওই তারিখে যাদের কাছে কোম্পানির শেয়ার থাকবে, তারা ঘোষিত লভ্যাংশ পাওয়ার জন্য যোগ্য বিবেচিত হবেন।

এদিকে চলতি হিসাববছরের তৃতীয় প্রান্তিকে কোম্পানিটির শেয়ার প্রতি আয় (EPS) হয়েছে ৭৬ পয়সা। গত বছর একই সময়ে শেয়ার প্রতি ১ টাকা ৩৮ পয়সা আয় হয়েছিল।

অন্যদিকে তিন প্রান্তিক মিলিয়ে কোম্পানিটির ইপিএস হয়েছে ২ টাকা ৮৫ পয়সা। গতবছর একই সময়ে ৪ টাকা ৪৯ পয়সা ইপিএস হয়েছিল।

গত ৩০ সেপ্টেম্বর, ২০২৪ তারিখে কোম্পানিটির শেয়ার প্রতি নিট সম্পদ মূল্য (এনএভিপিএস) ছিল ১৭ টাকা ৪৪ পয়সা।

চলতি অর্থবছরের প্রথম প্রান্তিকে (জুলাই-সেপ্টেম্বর’২৪) কোম্পানিটির শেয়ার প্রতি আয় (ইপিএস) হয়েছে ৯১ পয়সা। আগের অথবছর একই সময়ে ইপিএস ছিল ৩২ পয়সা।

আলোচ্য সময়ে কোম্পানিটির শেয়ার প্রতি ক্যাশ-ফ্লো হয়েছে ১ টাকা ৬৮ পয়সা। যা আগের অর্থবছরে ছিল ৯৮ পয়সা।

৩০ সেপ্টেম্বর, ২০২৪ তারিখে কোম্পানিটির শেয়ার প্রতি নিট সম্পদ মূল্য (এনএভিপিএস) দাঁড়িয়েছে ১৪ টাকা ২৮ পয়সায়।

Bangladesh lags behind competitors in RMG export

Instead of expanding the volume of readymade garment exports to the US, Bangladesh is falling behind its competitors in this regard. Though the export of RMG products of all top five exporters to the US in the first eight months of the year decreased, the decrease for Bangladesh is larger.

This was revealed in the latest report of the Office of Textile and Apparel (OTEXA) of the US Department of Commerce.

It said the US traders imported apparel products worth USD 51.3 billion from various countries around the world in the first eight months this year. The amount is 4.11 per cent less than the corresponding time last year.

According to the OTEXA, Bangladeshi entrepreneurs exported RMG products worth $4.71 in the US markets in that time period which is 9.16 per cent less than the time last year. The amount of export was $7.29 billion between January and August last year.

Bangladesh is the third largest exporter with 9 per cent market share while the share of China is 21.18 per cent, the largest exporter of RMG products to the US. The country exported products worth $10.69 billion which is 2.98 per cent less than the time last year

Vietnam is the second largest exporter of RMG products to the US. The country is also gaining momentum fast in recuperating from the drop in exports. It exported products worth $9.56 billion from January to August this year. The amount was $9.66 in the previous year.

India and Indonesia are the fourth and fifth largest exporters of RMG products to the US. The exports of India to the country dropped by 1.47 per cent while the drop was 7.16 per cent from Indonesia.

Though the production and export of RMG products for three months was hampered due to the quota reform movement, student-people uprising, floods and labour unrest, the entrepreneurs remain hopeful of the US market due to the formation of the interim government with Nobel Laureate economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the helm.

President of the apex body of knitwear manufacturers, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Fazle Shamim Ehsan, told Prothom Alo, “The buying of essential goods not made in the US declined due to inflation. The foreign buyers are a bit worried over the ongoing unrest in the markets. But we will turn around if we can ensure some kind of good governance.”

Responding to another question, Fazle Shamim Ehsan said, “We are hopeful about the US market.”

Given the positive global identity of the chief adviser of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, he pointed out, “If we could take avail some tariff facilities from the US, our export volume will rise.”

Desco suffers Tk1,046cr loss in 2 years, fails to pay dividends for first time

Once a fundamentally strong and profitable electricity supplier to retail customers, the state-owned company incurred losses of Tk541 crore in FY23 and Tk505 crore in FY24

The Dhaka Electric Supply Company (Desco) has suffered significant losses for the last two consecutive fiscal years due to disproportionate hikes in bulk and retail electricity tariffs, as well as dollar rate volatility.
 
Once a fundamentally strong and profitable electricity supplier to retail customers, the state-owned company incurred losses of Tk541 crore in FY23 and Tk505 crore in FY24.

As a result, its retained earnings have turned negative, and for the first time since listing, the firm has been unable to pay any dividends to its shareholders – 67.66% stake held by the government and the rest 32.34% by general investors.

Shareholders reacted sharply, leading to a 5.91% decline in its share price on Tuesday, closing at Tk22.30 each on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE).

According to data provided by Desco’s finance department to The Business Standard, electricity prices increased by 29.69% at the wholesale level and by 15.76% at the retail level in the fiscal 2022-23.

The company posted a net loss of Tk543 crore in FY23, primarily due to a foreign exchange loss of Tk428 crore, which was driven by the disproportionate increase in electricity prices at both wholesale and retail levels and the appreciation of the dollar.

In FY24, with an additional price increase of 5% at the wholesale level and 8% at the retail level, the total price hike reached 36.17% at the wholesale level and 25.02% at the retail level. Furthermore, due to a Tk9.26 appreciation of the dollar, the loss for FY24 amounted to Tk505 crore, including a foreign exchange loss of Tk243 crore.

An official from Desco’s finance department, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the primary reason for the significant losses was the disproportionate increase in bulk electricity tariffs compared to the prices at the consumer level. Additionally, as the dollar appreciated, the company incurred substantial losses from foreign debt repayments.

“Electricity is sold at a lower price than the rate at which it is purchased in bulk from the Power Development Board, resulting in a loss of Tk0.56 per unit of electricity sold,” the official explained.

Desco’s data shows that the total cost per unit, including distribution and other charges, is Tk10.85, while the selling price per unit is Tk10.29, resulting in a loss of Tk0.56 per unit sold.

Regarding the electricity price hikes, the company noted that after a 20.08% increase in bulk prices in December 2022, bulk prices were further raised by 8% in January 2023. At the retail level, a total price increase of 15.76% was introduced progressively in January, February, and March 2023, with a 5% hike each time.

A senior Desco official commented, “The financial condition of the company is weakening due to government policy decisions. Since its listing in 2006, the company has not been able to pay any dividends last year for the first time. If the government does not take new measures in the interest of common investors, the scale of losses will continue to grow.”

He added, “In consideration of the company’s investors in the capital market, the previous government had promised to either adjust electricity prices at the consumer level or reduce bulk electricity prices. However, with the change in government, that initiative has stalled.”

According to its annual audited reports for FY24, Desco’s electricity supply revenue (net of VAT) stood at Tk6,625 crore, compared to Tk5,372 crore a year ago. After paying for electricity purchases, its distribution revenue was Tk365 crore, up from Tk268 crore the previous year.

Desco earned Tk179 crore from other operating revenue, resulting in a 27% increase in total operating revenue, bringing it to Tk534 crore. The reports also noted that the cost of energy sales declined by 3.62% to Tk325 crore in FY24.

For FY24, Desco reported a net loss of Tk505 crore, attributing the majority of this loss to the depreciation of the taka against the dollar, as the company holds Tk2,748 crore in foreign loans. It incurred a foreign currency fluctuation loss of Tk243 crore, compared to Tk428 crore in the previous fiscal year.

Desco supplies electricity to most parts of the Dhaka North City Corporation. After incurring losses from the fiscal 1998-99 to the fiscal 2001-02, the company posted profits for 20 consecutive years until FY22.

As of 30 June 2024, Desco’s customer base had increased to 12.79 lakh, up from 12.40 lakh a year earlier on 30 June 2023. Additionally, Desco’s system loss declined to 5.58% as of June 2024, down from 5.72% in the previous fiscal year.

বিএসসি’র ৫ জাহাজে প্রচুর লাভ হচ্ছে, বংলাদেশে নেই একটিও

পুঁজিবাজারের তালিকাভুক্ত কোম্পানি বাংলাদেশ শিপিং কর্পোরেশনের (বিএসসি) ৫টি জাহাজে প্রচুর লাভ হচ্ছে। তবে একটিও বাংলাদেশে নেই। এসব জাহাজ জ্যামাইকাসহ বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশে রয়েছে বলে জানিয়েছেন নৌপরিবহন এবং পাট ও বস্ত্র মন্ত্রণালয়ের উপদেষ্টা ব্রিগেডিয়ার জেনারেল (অব.) ড. এম সাখাওয়াত হোসেন।

রোববার (৬ অক্টোবর) দুপুরে চট্টগ্রামে বাংলাদেশ শিপিং কর্পোরেশনের কনফারেন্স রুমে বাংলাদেশ পেট্রোলিয়াম কর্পোরেশনের (বিপিসি) চেয়ারম্যান এবং পরিচালকসহ শীর্ষস্থানীয় কর্মকর্তাদের সাথে মতবিনিময় সভা শেষে সাংবাদিকদের ব্রিফিংকালে তিনি এসব কথা বলেন।

সাখাওয়াত হোসেন বলেন, বিএসসিতে জাহাজের বহর আরও বড় হবে, ইনশাআল্লাহ। যত তাড়াতাড়ি সম্ভব কিছু জাহাজ দরকার। এ জাহাজ দিয়ে টাকা আয় করতে হবে। আমরা যতদিন আছি, একটা কাজ করতে পারি সেটা হচ্ছে দুর্নীতি কমানো।

পর পর অয়েল ট্যাংকারে বিস্ফোরণ ঘটায় কোন নাশকতার লক্ষণ আছে কিনা সংবাদিকদের এমন প্রশ্নের উত্তরে উপদেষ্টা বলেন, গত শুক্রবার সাড়ে ১২টার সময় বাংলার সৌরভে ঘটনা ঘটার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে এমডি জানিয়েছেন। প্রতিটি মুহূর্তে কী হচ্ছে জানতে পারছিলাম। বিএসসি থেকে তদন্ত করতে বলেছি। জাহাজের ইন্স্যুরেন্সের ব্যাপার আছে। তারপর একজন মারা গেছেন। তিনি আগুনে পুড়ে মারা যাননি। ট্রমার কারণে মারা গেছেন, ডাক্তাররা ভালো বলতে পারবেন। দুইটি জাহাজে অগ্নিকাণ্ডে চার জন মারা গেছেন। যেকোনো প্রাণহানি দুঃখের ব্যাপার।

তিনি বলেন, পর পর দুইটি ঘটনার কারণে জনমনে সন্দেহ জেগেছে। দুইটি ঘটনার পর সন্দেহ যাতে দূর হয় বা প্রকৃত ঘটনা যাতে বের করে আনা হয়। এ জন্য অ্যাডিশনাল সেক্রেটারিকে প্রধান করে একটি পৃথক তদন্ত কমিটি করা হবে। ৯-১০ সদস্যের বেশ বড় তদন্ত কমিটিতে যাতে বিশেষজ্ঞরা থাকেন। তারা এখানে আসবেন, তদন্ত শুরু হবে, জাহাজগুলো দেখবেন। সন্দেহজনক কিছু আছে কিনা, কী হয়েছে সে ব্যাপারে অনুমানভিত্তিক কোনো কথা বলতে চাই না। আপনারা অনুসন্ধান পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করুন। সিকিউরিটি এক্সপার্ট অয়েল ট্যাংকারে যারা কাজ করেছেন এবং বিএসসি’র প্রতিনিধিসহ ১০ জনের সমন্বয়ে তদন্ত কমিটি গঠন করা হয়েছে। তদন্ত কার্যক্রম শেষে বলা যাবে কেন এ ঘটনা ঘটেছে।

উপদেষ্টা বলেন, ‘বাংলার সৌরভ’ জাহাজে অগ্নিকাণ্ডের পর লাইটারিংয়ের জন্য বিএসসির এমডি তাৎক্ষণিক জাহাজ ভাড়া করেছেন। একটি কথা বলে রাখি, ঘটনা ঘটার আগেই এমডি বলেছিলেন, বাংলার সৌরভের শেষ ট্রিপ বা সেবা। দুর্ভাগ্যজনকভাবে ঘটনা ঘটে গেছে। আমার ভয় ছিল, যদি এ তেল ব্লাস্ট হলে চ্যানেল বন্ধ হয়ে যেত। আল্লাহর কাছে শোকর করছি। নেভি, কোস্টগার্ড, পোর্ট অথরিটি দ্রুত সময়ে গিয়ে এ রকম আগুন নিভিয়েছে।

এছাড়া নেভাল চিফ ভোর ৫টায় কল করে জানিয়েছেন, সম্পূর্ণ সহযোগিতা দিয়েছেন। নেভাল কমান্ডার, বন্দর চেয়ারম্যানের সঙ্গে সারাক্ষণ কথা হয়েছে। সাড়ে চারটায় আমাকে বলেছে সবাইকে রেসকিউ করা হয়েছে। একজনকে হাসপাতালে নেওয়া হচ্ছে। আমি পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খ জানি কারা সহযোগিতা করেছে। প্রফেশনালি অ্যাকশন হয়েছে। এত বড় দুর্ঘটনা, অনেক কিছু হতে পারতো। বিএসসির লোকজন বলেছে, এক হয়ে কাজ করবে। এ সংস্থার উন্নতি করবে। উনাদের প্ল্যান ও আমার ইচ্ছে, বিদেশি যারা আসবে তাদের বলবো জাহাজ শিল্পে বিনিয়োগ করো। কিছু দিন আগে বিদেশি বিনিয়োগকারীদের বলেছি, পাট ও জাহাজ শিল্পে বিনিয়োগ করতে।

তিনি আরও বলেন, জাহাজে আগুন লেগেছে তাই কিছু সেফটির বিষয় দেখতে হবে। এরপর ‘বাংলার সৌরভ’ থেকে অপরিশোধিত তেল স্থানান্তর করা হবে। বিপিসিকেও বলেছি, টার্মিনালের ক্যাপাসিটি বাড়ান।

চীন থেকে নতুন ৪ টি জাহাজ সংগ্রহ করা প্রসঙ্গে তিনি বলেন, একটি টিম কাজ করছে দাম নির্ধারণের জন্য। আমরা দাম কমানোর চেষ্টা করছি। কে টাকা নিয়ে গেল তা বের করা মুশকিল। কাউকে টাকা দিয়ে থাকলে কীভাবে বের করবো! ডলার ছিল ৯০ টাকা। তদন্ত হবে। প্রকল্প বন্ধ থাকলে জাহাজ তো পাবো না। এ মন্ত্রণালয়ে অনেক প্রকল্প হচ্ছে, এসব কেন হচ্ছে? প্রকল্প শেষ পর্যায়ে। এখন বন্ধ করে দিলে যে টাকা অপচয় হয়েছে তা আপনার, আমার। গলায় কাঁটা লেগেছে, গিলতে হবে। আমি তো বলেছি, চুরির মহাসমুদ্র না, প্রশান্ত মহাসাগর। আমাদের কাছে যে ডকুমেন্ট আছে তা দুদকের কাছে পাঠিয়ে দিচ্ছি। দুদক তদন্ত করবে।

২০২১ সালের ৩১ ডিসেম্বর পুঁজিবাজারের তালিকাভুক্ত হয়েছিল একমি পেস্টিসাইডস লিমিটেড। ২০২২-২৩ অর্থবছরের বিনিয়োগকারীদের জন্য মাত্র শেয়ারপ্রতি ১০ পয়সা করে লভ্যাংশ ঘোষণা দিয়েছিল। সে হিসাবে মোট লভ্যাংশ দাঁড়ায় মাত্র সাড়ে ১৩ লাখ টাকা। পরিচালক বাদ দিয়ে হিসাব করলে লভ্যাংশের পরিমাণ হয় প্রায় ৯ লাখ টাকা। এ ঘোষণার কয়েক মাস পেরিয়ে গেল। এর মধ্যে দিয়ে আরেকটি অর্থবছর পেরিয়ে গেল। তবুও বিনিয়োগকারীদের লভ্যাংশ পরিশোধ করতে চরমভাবে ব্যর্থ হয়। ফলে সাধারণ বিনিয়োগাকারীরা হতাশা প্রকাশ করেছেন।

বাংলাদেশ সিকিউরিটিজ অ্যান্ড এক্সচেঞ্জ কমিশন (এসইসি) সূত্রে জানা যায়, বাংলাদেশ সিকিউরিটিজ অ্যান্ড এক্সচেঞ্জ কমিশন (বিএসইসি) ২০২১ সালের ১৯ জুলাইয়ে ৭৮৫তম সভায় প্রাথমিক গণপ্রস্তাবের (আইপিও) মাধ্যমে পুঁজিবাজার থেকে ৩০ কোটি টাকা উত্তোলনের অনুমোদন দেয় একমি পেস্টিসাইডস লিমিটেডকে। অভিহিত মূল্য ১০ টাকা দামে তিন কোটি সাধারণ শেয়ার ইস্যুর মাধ্যমে পুঁজিবাজার থেকে ৩০ কোটি টাকা উত্তোলন করারা সুযোগ দেয়া হয় কোম্পানিটিকে। বিপরীতে গত ২২-২৩ অর্থবছরের বিনিয়োগকারীদের জন্য মাত্র শেয়ারপ্রতি ১০ পয়সা করে লভ্যাংশ ঘোষণা দিয়েছিল একমি পেস্টিসাইডস। সে হিসাবে মোট লভ্যাংশ দাঁড়ায় মাত্র সাড়ে ১৩ লাখ টাকা। এর মধ্য দিয়ে ২০২৩-২৪ অর্থবছর পেরিয়ে গেল। তবুও বিনিয়োগকারীদের লভ্যাংশ পরিশোধ করতে চরমভাবে ব্যর্থ হয়। আর সমাপ্ত অর্থবছরের ভালো লভ্যাংশ না পাওয়ার শঙ্কা প্রকাশ করেন বিনিযোগকারীরা।

সর্বশেষ অনিরীক্ষিত আর্থিক প্রতিবেদন অনুসারে, সদ্যসমাপ্ত ২০২২-২৩ হিসাববছরের প্রথম তিন প্রান্তিকে (জুলাই-মার্চ) একমি পেস্টিসাইডসের শেয়ারপ্রতি আয় (ইপিএস) হয়েছে ৮৬ পয়সা এবং আগের হিসাববছরের একই সময়ে যা ছিল এক টাকা ২৯ পয়সা। আর সর্বশেষ তৃতীয় প্রান্তিকে (জানুয়ারি-মার্চ) কোম্পানিটির ইপিএস হয়েছে ১৭ পয়সা এবং আগের হিসাববছরের একই সময়ে যা ছিল ৩১ পয়সা। অর্থাৎ এক বছরের ব্যবধানে শেয়ারপ্রতি আয় কমেছে ৪৫ শতাংশেরও বেশি। গত ৩১ মার্চ শেষে কোম্পানিটির শেয়ারপ্রতি নিট সম্পদমূল্য (এনএভিপিএস) দাঁড়িয়েছে ১৮ টাকা ৩৫ পয়সায়। এছাড়া ৩০ জুন সমাপ্ত ২০২১-২২ হিসাববছরের জন্য শেয়ারহোল্ডারদের পাঁচ শতাংশ নগদ লভ্যাংশ দিয়েছে একমি পেস্টিসাইডস। তখন কোম্পানিটির ইপিএস ছিল এক টাকা ৫১ পয়সা এবং আগের হিসাববছরে যা ছিল ২ টাকা ১২ পয়সা। অন্যদিকে ২০২১ সালের ৩০ জুন সমাপ্ত অর্থবছরের জন্য কোনো লভ্যাংশ দেয়নি। অথচ পুঁজিবাজারের তালিকাভুক্ত হওয়ার আগে ৩০ জুন ২০২০ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠানটির নিট মুনাফা ছিল ১৯ কোটি ৪৭ লাখ টাকা।

একই সময়ে শেয়ারপ্রতি আয় ছিল দুই টাকা এবং পুঞ্জীভূত মুনাফার পরিমাণ ছিল ৬৬ কোটি ৭৮ লাখ টাকা।
একমি পেস্টিসাইডসের একাধিক বিনিয়োগকারী এ প্রতিবেদককে বলেন, আইপিও আসা একটা কোম্পানি শেয়ারপ্রতি মাত্র ১০ পয়সা লভ্যাংশ দিতে পারে না। এটা মানা যায় না। একমি একটি ভালো গ্রুপ ছিল। তাদের উত্তরসূরি হয়ে একমি পেস্টিসাইড বিনিয়োগাকারীদের সঙ্গে প্রতারণা করছে। বিএসইসির উচিত এসব নিম্নমানের কোম্পানিগুলোর বোর্ড পুনর্গঠন করা। আর বিএসইেিত অনেক খারাপ লোক আছে, তাদেরও অপসারণ করতে হবে। ভালো লোক দিয়ে পরিচালনা করতে হবে। আইপিও ফান্ডের টাকা ব্যবহার শুরুর সময় অর্থাৎ ২০২১ সালের জানুযারি মাসে ভবন নির্মাণে দুই কোটি অগ্রিম দেখানো হচ্ছে। এর সাত মাস পর আগস্টে এসে দেখানো হয় ১০ কোটি টাকা ভবন নির্মাণের বিপরীতে অগ্রিম, যা রহস্যজনক। আর এত টাকা অগ্রিম দেয়ার কোনো নিয়ম নেই। অথচ প্রকৃত ব্যয়ের কোনো হিসাব নেই। আমরা জানি বিল্ডিং নির্মাণর কাজই শুরু হয়নি।

এখানে হয়তো ভুয়া হিসাবের মাধ্যমে টাকা তুলে নেয়া হয়েছে, অথবা নিজের অন্য প্রতিষ্ঠানে টাকা বিনিয়োগ করে নিজেই সুবিধা ভোগ করছে। অথচ শফিক বসাক অ্যান্ড কোং ওআশরাফ উদ্দিন কোং কীভাবে এ ধরনের অডিট রিপোর্ট প্রদান করে, তা কমিশনের উচিত তদন্ত করা। এ বিষয়ে জানতে একমি পেস্টিসাইডসের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক রেজাউর রহমান সিনহার ব্যবহƒত মুঠোফোন নাম্বারের একাধিকবার যোগাযোগ করা হলে তিনি ফোন রিসিভ করেননি। ফলে এ বিষয়ে তার মন্তব্য পাওয়া যায়নি। পরে প্রতিষ্ঠানটির প্রধান অর্থ কর্মকর্তা সেলিম রেজার সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করা হলে তিনি বলেন, আমরা জুলাই মাস থেকে বিনিয়োগাকালীদের লভ্যাংশ বিতরণ শুরু করেছি। তবে ব্যাংকিং জটিলতার কারণে আমরা পুরোপুরি লভ্যাংশ বিতরণ করতে পারিনি। তবে অন্য কারণে আমাদের জেড ক্যাটেগরি দেয়া হয়।

উল্লেখ্য, ২০২১ সালে পুঁজিবাজারে তালিকাভুক্ত একমি পেস্টিসাইডসের অনুমোদিত মূলধন ১৫০ কোটি ও পরিশোধিত মূলধন ১৩৫ কোটি টাকা। জেড ক্যাটেগরির কোম্পানির উদ্যোক্তা পরিচালকদের ৩১ শতাংশ ৮০ শতাংশ, প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক বিনিয়োগাকারীদের ১৫ দশমিক ৬২ শতাংশ এবং সাধারণ বিনিয়োগকারীদের হাতে ৫২ দশমিক ৫৮ শতাংশ শেয়ার মালিকানা রয়েছে।

Meghna Group tops the billion-dollar club as BSRM returns

The Meghna Group of Industries (MGI) has topped the billion-dollar club in the export-import sector again. Besides, BSRM, a top company in the steel industry of the country, made a comeback to the club after a year. The controversial S Alam Group, which has been accused of looting money from the finance sector, failed to secure a position in the billion-dollar club this time. A total of eight industrial groups of the country were bracketed in the billion-dollar club in the export-import sector at the end of the 2023-24 fiscal.

This came up in an analysis of Prothom Alo of the data provided by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) on the export-import sector in the 2023-24 fiscal. The Meghna Group of Industries tops the ranking of the billion-dollar-conglomerates of the country. It is followed by the Abul Khair Group, City Group, Pran–RFL, BSRM Group, Square Group, TK Group and the Bashundhara Group respectively.

In the last fiscal, these eight conglomerates did business worth USD 12.23 billion together in the export-import centre. The amount was USD 13.66 in the 2022-23 fiscal. As such, the size of export-import has lessened by 10 per cent in the 2023-24 fiscal as compared to the previous fiscal.

Industrial raw materials, consumer products and capital equipment cover a major portion of the import products of these business groups. The list of export products includes food products, electronics, chemicals, readymade garments and knitwear. The big business conglomerates of the country struggled to import products due to the dollar crisis in the 2023-24 fiscal, which eventually caused a decline in the import. Therefore, many of the companies stressed on exports amid the dollar crunch. As a result, exports of many groups increased despite the decline in imports.

Billion dollar business in export and import means the annual transaction of these groups is greater than the size of export and import. The value added as a result of producing goods from raw materials manifolds the annual transaction of the companies.

Prothom Alo has prepared the list of the companies in billion-dollar clubs analysing two key sectors of foreign trade – export and import. The list has been made on the basis of the account on export and import of the mother companies of these business groups only. This analysis excluded their joint investments and the accounts of other companies outside the main group. Besides, the list excluded the foreign companies operating in the country.

Meghna Group tops again
The Meghna Group of Industries has been holding the top position among the business conglomerates for the last few years. The business group has been investing in new industries and importing raw materials to hold on to the top position. The group spent more than USD 2.61 billion (as per the official dollar exchange rate fixed by the customs) in the 2023-24 fiscal to import 7.2 million tonnes of raw materials and equipment.

The group imports raw materials, and capital equipment and their parts. The company exported products worth USD 17.47 billion. Of this, the company earned USD 81.7 million from exports and USD 93 million came from carrying products on ships. Overall, the group has transacted some USD 2.79 billion in export and import in the last fiscal. The company has paid some Tk 40.6 billion for import.

The Meghna Group of industry was founded by entrepreneur Mostafa Kamal around 47 years ago. ‘Fresh’ is the main brand of the group. Around 53,000 people work in this group. The business group has 50 factories in 22 sectors. The group also controls four private economic zones.

Speaking to Prothom Alo, Meghna Group chairman Mostafa Kamal said, “The prices of raw materials were low in the global market in the 2023-24 fiscal as compared to the past. Import also declined due to the fall in demand and restrictions imposed by the government.”

“However, we have been trying to increase the export of local products and services in the foreign market as well as the local market. Export is rising as a result of this,” the Meghna Group chairman added.

He feels there will be new investments once the existing situation and the prevailing business environment in the country improves. It will increase employment opportunities, he said.

Abul Khair Group saw advancements

The Abul Khair Group rose to the second place of the list toppling the City Group within a year. This group is the leader in the cement, rod and corrugated steel sheet industries. The group also has business in the sectors of tobacco, food products and tea. The leading business conglomerate spent more than USD 1.87 billion to import 9 million tonnes of raw materials and equipment. The company’s expenditure in the import sector rose as it raised its investment in the steel industry.

At the same, Abul Khair Group’s export doubled in the last fiscal to USD 43.5 million. Overall, the business group has transacted some USD 1.92 billion in export-import in the last fiscal. The business conglomerate has paid the government a total of Tk 33.96 billion.

Industry entrepreneur Abul Khair was the founder of Abul Khair Group. Abul Khair’s offspring took the group to the top, which started with a grocery shop in 1950.

City Group in the third position

City Group is in the third place of the billion-dollar club. The business group spent a total of USD 1.66 billion, including taxes, to import some 2.1 million tonnes of products. Some 95 per cent of this has been spent on importing raw materials for consumer products.

City Group exported products worth USD 10.08 million in the last fiscal. The export products include foods and edible oil. The overall transactions of this business group in the last fiscal stood at USD 1.67 billion in export and import.

The main business of this group is processing daily essentials and their marketing. Late business entrepreneur Fazlur Rahman founded the City Group in 1972. Fazlur Rahman passed away last year. Now the second generation is leading the group. The business conglomerate entered several new industries in the last two decades. The main brand of this group is Teer.

Pran-RFL leads in export

The Pran-RFL Group is in the fourth place of the list of billion-dollar companies. However, the Pran-RFL Group tops the list in terms of export once again.

This industrial group imported products worth USD 1.09 billion in the last fiscal. The import products include import substitutes and raw material for export-oriented industries. The business group exported products worth USD 365.3 million outside the garments products last fiscal. The business conglomerate exported garment products worth USD 79.6 million. Pran-RFL Group transacted a total of USD 1.59 billion in total in the last fiscal.

Speaking to Prothom Alo, Pran-RFL Group chairman Ahsan Khan Chowdhury said, “We have been trying to diversify the export market and products. We have been investing in that. Besides, a number of multifaceted initiatives also played a role behind the rise in our exports. At the same time, we are producing the raw materials and intermediary raw materials of a number of products inside the country now. As a result, import declined.”

BSRM returns to top eight

The BSRM Group has secured a place in the list of top eight business groups in export-import through running businesses in the steel industries alone. BSRM controls a large portion of the iron-rod market in the country.

The business group has imported products worth more than USD 1.12 billion in the last fiscal. Some 76 per cent of these import products are iron scraps, intermediary raw material for rods. The group has exported products worth USD 15.6 million at the same time. The business group is led by the third generations of its owners.

BSRM Group managing director (MD) Aameir Alihussain told Prothom Alo, “We have the scope to do further better in the infrastructural sector. We have continued investing in the production of steel products, the main ingredient of this sector.”

“However, if we want to rise from the prevailing stagnant phase in the infrastructural industries in a quick time, then we will have to increase economic activities in the sector. Otherwise, investments will fall and there will be less employment opportunities.”

Square Group at the milestone of exporting to 100 countries

The Square Group, a top business conglomerate of the country, now exports products in more than 100 countries. The business group has exported products to 102 countries over the last two fiscals.

The group has imported products worth USD 700 million. The list of import products includes medicine, cosmetics, raw materials for garment and knitwear, spices and capital equipment. The business conglomerate has exported products worth USD 370 million. Readymade garments cover a major portion of the group’s export product.

In all, the group has transacted some 1.07 billion in export-import last fiscal. The Square Group progressed two notches ahead and is placed sixth in the list of billion-dollar business conglomerates.

Samson H Chowdhury was the mastermind behind the foundation of Square Group which was established by four friends in 1958. After his death, his sons are leading one of the oldest industries of the country.

Speaking to Prothom Alo, Square Textile chairman and managing director of Square Pharma, Tapan Chowdhury said, “We are gradually losing our ability to compete in the global market amid the rise in the expenditure in running business in the country. Therefore, we are not being able to realise our full potential. If the government provides policy assistance so that production cost remains steady and we can remain ahead in terms of competitiveness, then we will be able to further expand our export and market for our products. At the same time, both employment opportunities and investments will increase. We are passing through a stagnant phase in terms of drawing investments due to abnormal rise of expenditures.”

TK Group

The T K Group of Industries has imported products worth more than 1.02 billion. The products imported by this business group include raw materials for consumers’ product and steel industries, including steel sheets and corrugated tins.

The business group has exported products worth USD 8.3 million. The export products include food products, processed rawhide and different industrial by-products. Overall, the group has transacted a total of USD 1.03 billion in export-import.

The T K Group of Industries was founded by two brothers – Mohammed Abu Tayab and Mohammad Abul Kalam – over half a century ago. The first ever factory in many sectors in the country was launched by this group during the early periods of industrialisation in the country.

Bashundhara Group

The Bashundhara Group is at the eighth place in the billion dollar club. The industrial group imported raw materials and equipment worth USD 1.01 billion.

The group imports cement, consumer products, papers and raw materials for the bitumen industries. It has recently launched coal and stone businesses also. The group imported products worth USD 11.6 million.

The export products include food items, tissue, papers and some other products. In all, the business group has transacted a total of USD 1.02 billion in the last fiscal.

S Alam Group got excluded

The much discussed and controversial S Alam group mainly got a place in the list in the 2022-23 fiscal by importing consumer products worth USD 1.4 billion, which declined to USD 810 million in the 2023-24 fiscal. Most of the imported products are consumer products. Due to the fall in imports, the company failed to make it to the list in the 2023-24 fiscal.

Power in local market, focus on export

The demand for all sorts of products from daily essentials to industrial products is rising gradually. Capitalising on that, these billion-dollar groups have set up import substitution factories. Their main power is the local market.

However, these groups are now concerned over the dollar crisis that has been prevailing for more than two years. So the business conglomerates have also focused on exports like the Pran-RFL or the Square Group. However, the size of export of these groups is still negligible as compared to their import. But the export size of these companies is rising gradually.

Asked about this, private research agency Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) honorary fellow Mostafizur Rahman told Prothom Alo, the entrepreneurs have set up import substitution factories depending on the growing local market. And using this experience they have attained export competitiveness through developing product quality. This has resulted in a decline in the import of readymade products, which is a good aspect of industrialisation. But we also have to ensure that the small and medium industries can flourish as well. Then, they too will grow into big industries someday.
