Several well-performing banks, led by BRAC Bank and City Bank, saw strong deposit growth in the year ending May 2025 as depositors shifted funds away from weaker institutions amid fear of collapse and loss of trust in bank governance.
Bankers said the shift reflects public frustration with troubled banks that continue to restrict withdrawals despite receiving substantial liquidity support from the central bank.
Despite Bangladesh Bank injected over Tk 35,000 crore into nine of the most distressed banks, several of them continued negotiating partial withdrawals due to overwhelming demand, further fueling public anxiety.
The situation worsened as the central bank began enforcing disciplinary measures, including the restructuring of bank boards, the initiation of special audits and merger process — steps that, while intended to restore order, triggered further unease among depositors who feared deeper instability.
Amid this crisis of confidence, depositors flocked to stronger, better-governed banks that are widely perceived as safer and more liquid, according to a Bangladesh Bank data.
BRAC Bank led the pack with a 35 per cent year-on-year deposit growth in May, with total deposits rising to Tk 78,460 crore.
It was at Tk 70,425 crore in December 2024.
City Bank followed with a 28 per cent rise, including its Islamic banking wing, reaching Tk 56,404 crore in deposits in May. It was at Tk 51,751 crore in December.
Jamuna Bank secured the third position, posting a 27 per cent growth to reach Tk 33,230 crore in May. Eastern Bank saw a 21 per cent rise to Tk 48,355 crore over the same period.
Pubali Bank, Dutch-Bangla Bank, and Trust Bank each registered 20 per cent deposit growth, with respective balances at Tk 80,084 crore, Tk 59,448 crore, and Tk 47,601 crore in May respectively.
Other banks showing robust growth include Mutual Trust Bank with 17 per cent, NCC Bank with 14 per cent, Bank Asia with 12 per cent, and Prime Bank with 11 per cent.
These banks are regarded as more resilient due to stronger compliance frameworks and healthier asset profiles.
Even Islami Bank Bangladesh, which has faced serious allegations of loan scams and mismanagement under the control of S Alam Group, managed to post a 7.48 per cent growth in deposits.
The bank began regaining depositor confidence after a major board overhaul in 2024. Its deposit base grew from Tk 1,58,435 crore in December to Tk 1,66,217 crore in May.
Banks associated with the S Alam Group experienced sharp declines.
Social Islami Bank posted a 17.38 per cent negative growth in deposits. First Security Islami Bank saw a 7.73 per cent fall, Bangladesh Commerce Bank 9 per cent, Global Islami Bank 7.15 per cent, National Bank 13.21 per cent, and Union Bank 2 per cent.
Exim Bank, which was under the control of NASSA Group saw 14 per cent fall in May.
The damage to these banks’ deposit bases was somewhat limited only because they restricted withdrawals, failing to meet depositor demands. Without such restrictions, bankers noted, the losses would have been much more severe.
According to central bank data, total deposits in the banking sector, excluding government and interbank accounts, stood at Tk 18,32,065 crore in May 2025, up from Tk 17,00,608 crore a year earlier—representing a 7.73 percent year-on-year increase.
However, bankers said the growth is sharply uneven. While strong banks continue to attract growing volumes of deposits, weaker banks remain under intense liquidity stress.

২০২৫ সালের এপ্রিল-জুন প্রান্তিকে কোম্পানিটির ইপিএস হয়েছে ১ টাকা ৮০ পয়সা। আগের বছরের একই সময়ে যা ছিল ৯ টাকা ৪৮ পয়সা। জানুয়ারি-জুন ২০২৫—এই ছয় মাসে ইপিএস হয়েছে ৭ টাকা ৬৯ পয়সা, যেখানে গত বছরের একই সময়ে তা ছিল ১৭ টাকা ১৪ পয়সা। এদিকে ইপিএস কমলেও শেয়ারপ্রতি নেট অপারেটিং ক্যাশ ফ্লো (এনওসিএফপিএস) উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে বেড়েছে। জানুয়ারি-জুন ২০২৫ সময়ে এনওসিএফপিএস বেড়ে হয়েছে ৯ টাকা ৫ পয়সা, যেখানে গত বছর এই সময়ে তা ছিল ঋণাত্মক ২০ টাকা ৮৭ পয়সা। কোম্পানিটি জানায়, রপ্তানি আয় বেড়ে যাওয়া ও নগদ অর্থপ্রবাহ ব্যয় কমে যাওয়ায় এই উন্নতি হয়েছে।
এদিকে চলতি বছরের জুন মাসে প্রায় ৬০ বছর পর ঢাকা থেকে কারখানা সাভারে সরিয়ে নিতে শুরু করে ব্রিটিশ আমেরিকান টোব্যাকো বাংলাদেশ কোম্পানি বা বিএটিবিসি। কোম্পানিটি রাজধানীর মহাখালী থেকে সাভারের আশুলিয়ায় তাদের কারখানা সরিয়ে নিচ্ছে।
কোম্পানিটি সর্বশেষ ২০২৪ সালের জন্য বিনিয়োগকারীদের ৩০০ শতাংশ নগদ লভ্যাংশ দিয়েছে। অর্থাৎ প্রতি শেয়ারের বিপরীতে একজন শেয়ারধারী ৩০ টাকা লভ্যাংশ পেয়েছেন।

Bangladeshi conglomerate Square Group is going for a massive expansion both at home and abroad, said Tapan Chowdhury, managing director of Square Pharmaceuticals Ltd, a key arm of the group.
In an interview with The Daily Star, Chowdhury said the pharmaceutical unit in Pabna has already gone through an expansion.
That included the construction of a new plant in the Pabna BSCIC industrial estate to produce steroids, hormones, and nasal sprays.
“The expansion is ongoing as demand continues to rise, both in domestic and international markets,” Chowdhury said.
“We are also looking for collaboration with international companies for further expansion of the pharmaceuticals unit.”
The managing director of Square Pharmaceuticals declined to share details of the investment or total costs for the Pabna facility expansion.
He, however, said that the group is eyeing both European and African markets for its products.
This year holds special significance for the conglomerate as it marks the birth centenary of its founder, Samson H Chowdhury.
To honour his legacy, the group plans to set up a large hospital in Dhaka’s outskirts, in the Amin Bazar area, mainly for middle-income people.
The original plan for the hospital was slated for Pabna. However, the lack of interest among skilled doctors to relocate away from the capital prompted the decision to move it closer to Dhaka, where Square owns the required land.
Chowdhury said the new hospital will have 500 beds and will be staffed by many of the doctors currently employed at Square Hospital.
“It will not be expensive, but we will maintain the same standards of care,” he added. The group also plans to set up a medical college, a nursing institute, and a care home for the elderly on the same site.
According to Chowdhury, these will help build a sustainable pipeline of healthcare professionals and eventually serve society better. He hopes many of the students from these institutions will go on to work within the hospitals owned by the group.
The MD said Square is also expanding its existing pharmaceutical operations in Kenya and exploring opportunities to set up a manufacturing unit in Saudi Arabia.
Talks are underway with a Saudi company to jointly develop a textile venture there, although the move depends on government approval for overseas investment.
“The government should allow such investments after due diligence,” Chowdhury said.
At home, Square is scaling up its food and beverage, toiletries, and textile units to meet growing demand.
“Despite being a nation of 18 crore, many products such as beverages and biscuits are still heavily imported,” he said. “There is enormous potential to fill that gap locally while also catering to export markets.”
He added that public trust in Square products comes from the company’s focus on quality.
Chowdhury said their textiles and garments division continues to perform well. The spinning units are being expanded, and the garment wing alone currently exports goods worth around $800 million annually.
Speaking about the reciprocal tariff by the US administration, he expressed concern over the rates, saying that the 35 percent duty poses a threat to Bangladesh’s overall apparel exports.
“If properly negotiated, the rate can be brought down,” he said.
The group, with an annual turnover of $3 billion, now employs more than 70,000 people and expects to create many more jobs as new plants and hospitals come online.
Unlike other conglomerates, Chowdhury said Square is not an owner-driven company. Rather, it operates like a family, where executives are empowered to make decisions.
He called for a level playing field across industries, stressing that the rule of law must apply equally to all businesses, regardless of size.
“Big companies should act responsibly, as smaller ones often follow their lead,” he said, referring to industry setbacks following the political changeover in August last year.
Regarding consistent energy supplies to factories, Chowdhury urged the government to invest more in domestic gas exploration or ensure adequate liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports to meet industrial demand.
He said that Square is installing solar panels in the northern districts to reduce the group’s reliance on fossil fuels.
He advocated for greater transparency in petroleum imports to check wastage and embezzlement, which he said drives up business costs.
“Bangladesh faces many challenges in doing business,” he said. “But there are just as many opportunities, and the challenges can be overcome.”

The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), the country’s premier bourse, is working to bring Ashuganj Power Station Company — one of the nation’s largest state-owned power producers — to the stock market, in line with the government’s push for listing profitable state-owned enterprises (SOEs).
The DSE wrote to the government and relevant authorities, including the Power Division, urging them to take necessary initiatives for the listing.
On Thursday, the DSE, including its chairman, met with high officials of Ashuganj Power Station, which raised Tk100 crore through bond issuance in 2019 to finance its new power plant with 400MW combined cycle (East) power plant.
According to DSE officials, this is the first step toward bringing SOEs to the capital market following the directive from Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, issued during a meeting with top capital market officials in May this year.
The interim government has decided to bring profitable SOEs and multinational companies (MNCs) with government stakes to the stock market.
Raising capital through an initial public offering (IPO) is usually a time-consuming process, often taking one to two years from filing to trading, as seen in peer countries.
However, the DSE aims to bring Ashuganj Power Station to the market in a shorter timeframe, as much of its financial documentation was already prepared during its earlier bond issuance.
DSE Chairman Mominul Islam told TBS, “Ashuganj Power Station previously raised funds by issuing bonds in the capital market. In a meeting, the company expressed its interest in getting listed. The listing proposal will hopefully be placed at its upcoming board meeting.”
He said that the power producer has a strong financial base and generates a substantial amount of profit every year, producing electricity. The DSE is ready to extend full cooperation and technical support throughout the listing process to ensure a smooth and efficient transition.
Ashuganj Power Station is engaged in the generation, supply, and sale of electricity through the national grid to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).
An official at Ashuganj Power Station, seeking anonymity, told TBS, “We are a government-owned firm. If the government wants us to be listed on the stock market, we are bound to follow that directive in support of both national interest and capital market development.”
“The company has plans to expand its generation capacity, which will require a substantial amount of funds in the near future. Previously, most of the funding came from foreign lenders. If we can raise funds from the capital market, it will be very helpful,” he added.
Ashuganj Power Station Company’s paid-up capital stands at Tk1,372.60 crore, divided into 137.26 crore shares. The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) holds 124.92 crore shares (91.01%), while the Power Division owns 12.31 crore shares (8.98%).
Commissioned in 1966 as the country’s largest power plant at the time, Ashuganj Power Station (APS) began operations with two units totalling 128 MW, which became operational by July 1970. Following independence, the plant played a key role in national reconstruction and development.
Three additional units of 150 MW each were added in 1986 and 1987. A combined cycle plant, with two 56MW gas turbines and one 34MW steam turbine, was installed in phases between 1982 and 1986.
With continued expansion, APS now has a total installed capacity of 1,690 MW. In FY 2023–24, it supplied 7,571.08 million kWh of electricity to the national grid—up 9.39% from the previous year.
Profit doubles to Tk489cr in FY24
According to its annual report, Ashuganj Power Station hit a record profit with Tk489 crore with basic earnings per share (EPS) of Tk3.57 in the 2023-24 fiscal year, which is almost double compared to the 2022-23 fiscal year. While its revenue from selling electricity grew 33.33% to Tk4,473 crore.
In FY23, its revenue was Tk3,380 crore and net profit Tk244.58 crore with basic EPS of Tk1.78. The profit growth trajectory has continued in the first half of the 2024-25 fiscal year, ending on 30 December.
In the first half of FY25, it reported a growth of 20% in net profit to Tk321.74 crore with an EPS of Tk2.34, up from Tk268.65 crore and EPS of Tk1.96 in the same time of the previous fiscal year.
During the July to December period of FY25, its revenue slightly increased to Tk2265.96cr, which was Tk2226cr at the same time of the previous fiscal year.
Its quarterly reports showed that its total assets, as at 30 December 2024, were Tk17,253 crore, while its total liabilities were Tk13,529.65 crore.
Of the total liabilities, its non-current liabilities are Tk7,462.79 crore, mostly foreign loans of Tk4,491 crore, while total current liabilities of Tk6,066.85 crore are mostly trade payable to Tk4,023 crore.
It has loans of Tk4491 crore from ADB and IDB for its 450MW north and 400MW east power plant.
As of 30 December, its retained earnings stood at Tk2,185.05 crore.
50% of Tk100cr bond already repaid
Ashuganj Power Station Company raised Tk100 crore through a public bond offering around six years ago to finance its 400MW (East) power plant, with a tenure of seven years.
According to Company Secretary Mohammad Abul Mansur, the power producer has already repaid Tk50 crore of the bond principal to its investors. The remaining amount will be repaid by January 2027.
He also noted that a major portion of the Tk500 crore raised through private placement has already been repaid, with the remaining due by January 2026.
As per the company’s information memorandum, the total projected cost of the power plant is Tk2,310.13 crore. Of this, Tk1,737 crore came from loans provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Islamic Development Bank (IDB), while the remainder was financed through government loans and bond issuance.

Fareast Islami Life Insurance Company – once a top premium earner among the country’s life insurers – is going to sell three pieces of land located at Gulshan, Kakrail and Feni to pay claims by policyholders, which have been due for several years.
According to the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA), it has approved Fareast Islami Life’s plan to sell the properties to settle outstanding client claims. The move aligns with IDRA’s firm stance on restoring public trust in the insurance sector.
Earlier, IDRA Chairman M Aslam Alam emphasised that insurance companies must settle claims on time — even if it requires selling their assets.
According to IDRA data, Fareast Islami Life had total outstanding claims of Tk2,976 crore as of the end of March this year. Of that amount, the company had paid only Tk58.35 crore, leaving 98% of claims unsettled.
The company published a notice to sell the lands recently, but did not disclose it to the stock exchanges which is non-compliance as per the listing regulation.
Shahidul Islam, acting CEO, and Sheikh Khaled Zahir, company secretary of Fareast Life, could not be reached for comments as they did not pick the phone despite repeated attempts.
According to the company’s notice, the life insurer will sell a 33 decimal land with a one-storied building at Gulshan-2, 32 decimal land with a four-storied building at Kakrail and 15 decimal land with a two-storied building at Feni. The company requested the interested buyers to submit their proposals by 7 August. However, the company did not mention the value of the land.
Amid the company’s deteriorating financial condition, the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) appointed Shiraz Khan Basak & Company, a chartered accounting firm, in April 2021 to conduct a special audit of Fareast Islami Life Insurance.
The audit was commissioned following allegations that the insurer had failed to settle customer claims and make payments on matured policies.
The audit report revealed that approximately Tk2,367 crore had been embezzled by top executives. In addition, accounting irregularities amounting to Tk432 crore were uncovered.
Former chairmen Nazrul Islam and MA Khaleque, former CEO Hemayet Ullah, along with several former directors and senior officials, were implicated in the misappropriation.
Funds were primarily siphoned off through two methods: purchasing land at inflated prices and obtaining bank loans by mortgaging the company’s Mudaraba Term Deposit Receipts.
In response, the BSEC dissolved the company’s board and dismissed CEO Hemayet Ullah in September 2021.
Later in 2022, under the leadership of Shibli Rubayat-Ul-Islam, the BSEC permitted individuals linked to the Beximco Group to join Fareast Islami Life’s board. Prior to their appointment, Beximco-affiliated firms had acquired shares in the company.
Following the change in government, both the Beximco-linked board members and the BSEC-appointed independent directors resigned.
After their departure, former sponsors – who had been forced out of the company between 2009 and 2011 – returned to Fareast Islami Life and resumed control of the board.
The company, which was incorporated in Bangladesh in 2000, got listed on the country’s stock market in 2005.

এপ্রিল মাসে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র প্রশাসন বাংলাদেশি পণ্যের ওপর ৩৭ শতাংশ পাল্টা শুল্ক আরোপের ঘোষণা দেয়। পরে তা কমিয়ে ৩৫ শতাংশ করা হয় এবং আগামী ১ আগস্ট থেকে তা কার্যকর করার কথা। এ নিয়ে মার্কিন প্রশাসনের সঙ্গে দর-কষাকষি করছে বাংলাদেশ সরকার। নতুন পাল্টা শুল্ক আরোপ হলে তৈরি পোশাকসহ বিভিন্ন পণ্য যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বাজারে প্রবেশ করতে বাড়তি শুল্ক দিতে হবে। এ খাতের ব্যবসায়ীরা মনে করেন, এতে পণ্যের রপ্তানি ব্যাপকভাবে কমতে পারে, যা সার্বিক অর্থনীতিতে প্রভাব ফেলবে।
এদিকে মূল্যস্ফীতি সম্পর্কে এডিবির জুলাই সংস্কার প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়েছে, বিদায়ী অর্থবছরের মূল্যস্ফীতি কিছুটা কমেছে। এর পেছনে বৈশ্বিক পণ্যমূল্যের স্থিতিশীলতা, কড়াকড়ি আর্থিক ও রাজস্বনীতি ভূমিকা রেখেছে। একই কারণে ২০২৬ অর্থবছরের পূর্বাভাস অপরিবর্তিত রাখা হয়েছে।
গত এপ্রিল মাসের এডিবির প্রতিবেদনে ২০২৫-২৬ অর্থবছরে সার্বিক গড় মূল্যস্ফীতি ৮ শতাংশ নেমে আসার পূর্বাভাস দেওয়া হয়।
তিন বছর ধরে দেশে উচ্চ মূল্যস্ফীতি বিরাজমান আছে। তবে কয়েক মাস ধরে মূল্যস্ফীতি কমেছে। বাংলাদেশ পরিসংখ্যান ব্যুরোর (বিবিএস) হিসাবে, গত জুন মাসে সার্বিক মূল্যস্ফীতি কিছুটা কমে ৮ দশমিক ৪৮ শতাংশ হয়েছে, যা ২০২২ সালের জুলাই মাসের পর সর্বনিম্ন। গত এক বছরের মধ্যে ২০২৪ সালের জুলাই মাসে ১৩ বছরের মধ্যে সর্বোচ্চ ১৪ দশমিক ১০ শতাংশ খাদ্য মূল্যস্ফীতি হয়েছে। পরের সাত মাস খাদ্য মূল্যস্ফীতি ১০ শতাংশের বেশি ছিল। পরের পাঁচ মাসে তা ১০ শতাংশের নিচে নেমে আসে।

শেয়ারবাজারে তালিকাভুক্ত খুলনা পাওয়ার কোম্পানি লিমিটেড (কেপিসিএল) তাদের দ্বিতীয় বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্রটি তুরস্কের আকসা এনার্জি উরেটিম এএস- এর কাছে বিক্রি করার চুক্তি করেছে। ১১৫ মেগাওয়াট ক্ষমতার এই বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্রটি বিদ্যুৎ ক্রয় চুক্তি (পিপিএ) নবায়ন না হওয়ায় ২০২৪ সালের মার্চ মাস থেকে অচল অবস্থায় ছিল।
ঢাকা স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জে (ডিএসই) দাখিল করা এক মূল্য সংবেদনশীল বিবৃতির মাধ্যমে কোম্পানিটি এই চুক্তির কথা জানিয়েছে। তবে এই লেনদেনের আর্থিক মূল্য প্রকাশ করা হয়নি।
সাম্প্রতিক বছরগুলোতে এটি খুলনা পাওয়ারের দ্বিতীয় বড় ধরনের বিনিয়োগ প্রত্যাহারের ঘটনা। এর আগে কোম্পানিটি তাদের প্রথম ১১০ মেগাওয়াট বার্জ-মাউন্টেড বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্রটি ১৫ মিলিয়ন ডলারে (প্রায় ১৩০ কোটি টাকা) মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের এক্সেলেরেট গ্লোবাল অপারেশনস এলএলসি-এর কাছে বিক্রির চুক্তি করেছিল।
বর্তমানে খুলনা পাওয়ারের একমাত্র আয়-উৎপাদনকারী সম্পদ হলো তাদের ১৫০ মেগাওয়াটের ইউনাইটেড পায়রা পাওয়ার প্ল্যান্ট, যেখানে কোম্পানিটির ৩৫ শতাংশ অংশীদারিত্ব রয়েছে।
