LafargeHolcim Bangladesh saw a 5 percent rise in sales in the April to June quarter of 2025, while its profits rose by 20 percent.

In the second quarter, the multinational cement producer’s net sales rose to Tk 646 crore and profits advanced to Tk 96 crore, according to a press release issued by the company yesterday.

“We achieved solid volume growth in cement and aggregates, driven by strong market demand and growing customer confidence,” said Iqbal Chowdhury, CEO of the company.

Specialised cement products ‘Water Protect’ and ‘Fair Face’ recorded an impressive 28 percent growth, underscoring a clear consumer preference for value-added solutions.

Profitability was impacted by rising energy costs and falling cement prices, prompting cost-efficiency measures and strategic pricing reviews, the company said.

“Our innovation and diversification efforts continued to yield results, including the co-processing of over 21,000 tonnes of waste via Geocycle, replacing 11 percent of fossil fuels,” Chowdhury said.

“Despite the current challenges, we remain optimistic about improved performance in the upcoming quarters,” he hoped.

In the first half of the year, net sales reached Tk 1,498 crore, a 4 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The company’s earnings per share (EPS) stood at Tk 2.03, marking a 3 percent decline from Tk 2.09 in the January to June period of the previous year, though EPS improved by 20 percent year-on-year.

Regarding the outlook, the company said it continues to prioritise operational efficiency, product portfolio diversification, and pricing strategy enhancement to bolster profitability in the upcoming quarters.

At the same time, ongoing investments in sustainability and digital transformation are set to reinforce its long-term competitive advantage, it added.

Stocks of the cement producer rose 2 percent to Tk 56 at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) yesterday.

RAK Ceramics (Bangladesh) experienced a loss of Tk 185 million in the April-June quarter this year, 20 times greater than the loss incurred in the same quarter a year earlier.

A significant rise in production costs compounded by the shortage of gas supply magnified the loss reported for the second quarter of this year, said company secretary Muhammad Shahidul Islam.

“Our overhead costs remained as high as before while production halved in the year through June.” The company’s loss mounted as operating costs escalated, added Mr Islam.

The company held a board meeting on Tuesday to approve its financial statements for the second quarter and the six months through June. It, however, is yet to publish the statements.

RAK Ceramics’ revenue fell 2.66 per cent year-on-year to Tk 31 billion in January-June (H1) this year. It witnessed a loss of Tk 210 million during the period as opposed to a profit of Tk 36.74 million reported for the same period of the previous year.

The dollar crisis hampered imports of raw materials, which also contributed to the decline in production in H1 of the current calendar year, compared to the same period a year ago.

The company secretary, however, sees a glimmer of hope. He said, “Our company returned to full production this month following an improvement in gas supply”.

Despite the poor performance, the company on Tuesday was transferred to the segment of A category stocks from junk stocks on the grounds that it had completed distribution of 10 per cent cash dividends for the year ended in December last year.

Meanwhile, the exchanges requested stock brokers and merchant bankers to refrain from providing loan facilities for the purchase of shares of RAK Ceramics in the seven days following the change of category.

RAK Ceramics had reported a profit of Tk 905 million for 2021. Annual profits started eroding in 2023. The yearly income was Tk 618 million in 2023, which shrank to Tk 27 million next year.

The recent recovery of the stock market shows promise but raises alarm at the same time as non-operational companies’ stocks have been flying high on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) alongside blue-chip scrips.

Most of these small-cap firms have been witnessing losses pile up and there is no sign of recovery in the foreseeable future. These firms have failed to pay dividends for years. Still, their stocks have been soaring, mostly driven by speculation.

The price appreciation of the junk stocks gives a message that market manipulators are still active in the secondary market despite stricter punitive measures taken by the newly-formed commission against wrongdoers.

Some of the companies have not been in operation for years and avoided making any earnings disclosure.

To expose the real operational status of the companies, DSE inspection teams visited at least three companies — Aramit Cement, Ratanpur Steel Re-rolling Mills, and Nurani Dyeing this week, recently and found their factories shut.

Though business operations had remained suspended, the stock of Aramit Cement surged 16 per cent, Ratanpur Steels jumped 23 per cent, and Nurani Dyeing rose 10 per cent on the Dhaka bourse in the month to Tuesday.

Analysts suspect price manipulation behind the price appreciation.

Without manipulation, such kind of stock price jump of closed companies is not possible, said Md Sajedul Islam, managing director of Shyamol Equity Management.

“A stock exhibits rally when a certain group of people influence the price while others join the rally not to miss out on the opportunity to make quick bucks,” said Mr Islam.

General investors keep chasing stocks when they fly on the bourses to make capital gains overnight, a tendency that manipulators cash in on by selling off overvalued stocks to general investors.

The exchanges have to be empowered to delist junk companies from the trading board; otherwise vested groups will repeatedly gamble with such stocks, added Mr Islam.

“Investors have been turning to junk stocks in the past few weeks, with hopes of higher returns from lower investments, taking advantage of the ongoing market rally,” said a merchant banker, requesting not to be named.

In September 2023, the DSE identified 14 poor-performing companies in attempts to expose their real financial status to investors. Some had kept operations halted but they refrained from providing any information to shareholders.

DSE probe teams had already visited more than 10 companies until Tuesday and found their factories closed.

One of those, Khulna Printing & Packaging has been producing nothing since October 2021. The company’s cumulative losses reached Tk 960 million until FY22.

The loss-making company failed to declare any dividend for the last four financial years. It disbursed only 0.25 per cent cash dividends for the last time in FY20.

Despite the grim performance, the stock of Khulna Printing jumped 25 per cent in the month to Tuesday. The stock earlier exhibited an unusual rally in January this year. At the time, it skyrocketed to Tk 33.2 per share from Tk 7.2 per share within a month with no price sensitive information.

Dulamia Cotton’s stock price jumped 42 per cent in the month to Tuesday although the company has been suffering losses for years.

Meghna Pet Industries, which reported losses and negative retained earnings, scaled up 32 per cent in the month.

Meanwhile, the benchmark equity index continued its bullish momentum for the sixth straight session on Tuesday, as investors’ buying interest remained resilient-particularly in large-cap stocks.

The DSEX, key index of the Dhaka bourse, went up by 51 points or 0.97 per cent to 5,270 on Tuesday. It gained 209 points in the past six sessions while the market cap surged by Tk 225 billion.

The DS30 index, a group of 30 prominent companies, gained 33 points to 2,030 and the DSES Index, which represents Shariah-based companies, added 15 points to 1,161.

However, turnover dropped 16 per cent to Tk 7.22 billion from the 10-month high turnover the day before.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange also ended higher, with its All Share Price Index (CASPI) increasing by 81 points to 14,654, while the Selective Categories Index (CSCX) rose by 58 points to 8,956.

তালিকাভুক্ত কোম্পানিগুলোর পরিচালন কার্যক্রম যাচাইয়ের উদ্দেশ্যে কারখানা ও প্রধান কার্যালয় পরিদর্শন করছেন ঢাকা স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জের (ডিএসই) কর্মকর্তারা। এরই ধারাবাহিকতায় সিমেন্ট খাতের আরামিট সিমেন্ট লিমিটেড ও বস্ত্র খাতের নূরানী ডায়িং অ্যান্ড সোয়েটার লিমিটেডের কারখানা পরিদর্শনে গিয়ে উৎপাদন বন্ধ পান এক্সচেঞ্জটির কর্মকর্তারা। এর মধ্যে গতকাল আরামিট সিমেন্ট এবং তার আগের দিন নূরানী ডায়িংয়ের কারখানা পরিদর্শন করা হয়। ডিএসই সূত্রে এ তথ্য জানা গেছে।

গতকাল ডিএসইতে আরামিট সিমেন্টের শেয়ার সর্বশেষ ১৩ টাকা ৮০ পয়সায় লেনদেন হয়েছে।

২০১৭ সালে পুঁজিবাজারে তালিকাভুক্ত নূরানী ডায়িংয়ের অনুমোদিত মূলধন ১৫০ কোটি ও পরিশোধিত মূলধন ১২২ কোটি ৬২ লাখ ৫০ হাজার টাকা। রিজার্ভে রয়েছে ২ কোটি ৫১ লাখ টাকা। মোট শেয়ার সংখ্যা ১২ কোটি ২৬ লাখ ২৫ হাজার ৩০। এর মধ্যে ৩০ দশমিক ৯৩ শতাংশ রয়েছে উদ্যোক্তা পরিচালকের কাছে। এছাড়া প্রতিষ্ঠানিক বিনিয়োগকারীদের কাছে ১৭ দশমিক ২৮ ও সাধারণ বিনিয়োগকারীদের কাছে বাকি ৫১ দশমিক ৭৯ শতাংশ শেয়ার রয়েছে।

নূরানী ডায়িং চার বছর ধরে নিরীক্ষিত ও অনিরীক্ষিক আর্থিক প্রতিবেদন প্রকাশ করছে না। কোম্পানিটির সর্বশেষ প্রকাশিত প্রতিবেদন অনুসারে, ২০২০-২১ হিসাব বছরের প্রথম তিন প্রান্তিকে (জুলাই-মার্চ) ‌শেয়ারপ্রতি লোকসান হয়েছিল ৯৫ পয়সা, আগের বছরের একই সময়ে যা ছিল ৪২ পয়সা। ২০১৯-২০ হিসাব বছরে শেয়ারহোল্ডারদের সর্বশেষ ১০ শতাংশ বোনাস লভ্যাংশ দিয়েছিল নূরানী ডায়িং অ্যান্ড সোয়েটার। এর পর থেকে কোম্পানিটি বিনিয়োগকারীদের কোনো লভ্যাংশ দেয়নি।

ডিএসইতে গতকাল নূরানী ডায়িংয়ের শেয়ার সর্বশেষ ৩ টাকা ৩০ পয়সায় লেনদেন হয়েছে। গত এক বছরে শেয়ারটির দর ২ টাকা ৮০ থেকে ৬ টাকা ৬০ পয়সার মধ্যে ওঠানামা করেছে।

বিদ্যুৎ ও জ্বালানি খাতের সরকারি কোম্পানিগুলোকে পুঁজিবাজারে সরাসরি তালিকাভুক্তির লক্ষ্যে বিদ্যুৎ, জ্বালানি ও খনিজ সম্পদ উপদেষ্টা মুহাম্মদ ফাওজুল কবির খানের সঙ্গে বৈঠক করেছেন বাংলাদেশ সিকিউরিটিজ অ্যান্ড এক্সচেঞ্জ কমিশনের (বিএসইসি) চেয়ারম্যান খন্দকার রাশেদ মাকসুদ।

সোমবার (২১ জুলাই) রেল ভবনে এ বৈঠক অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। বৈঠকে বাংলাদেশ বিদ্যুৎ উন্নয়ন বোর্ডের চেয়ারম্যান মো. রেজাউল করিম, বিএসইসি কমিশনার মু. মোহসিন চৌধুরী অংশগ্রহণ করেন।

সরকারি কোম্পানি পুঁজিবাজারে আনতে বিদ্যুৎ উপদেষ্টা-বিএসইসি চেয়ারম্যানের বৈঠক

The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), in an inspection, has found that the Ratanpur Steel Re-Rolling Mills (RSRM) Limited factory is currently non-operational. 

A DSE team, which visited the company’s manufacturing facility in Chattogram yesterday(19 July), reported that operations were completely shut down.

Despite the disclosure, RSRM shares surged by 7.62% yesterday (19 July), closing at Tk11.30 on the DSE. The company continues to trade under the Z category, having failed to publish any financial statements since the 2020-21 fiscal year.

RSRM’s parent entity, Ratanpur Group, was once one of Chattogram’s largest industrial conglomerates, founded in 1984 and employing around 800 people in production until 2019. At its peak, the group’s annual turnover stood at approximately Tk700 crore.

However, in December 2020, two of its steel plants ceased operations due to unpaid electricity bills and a lack of working capital. The company had earlier assured the DSE that it would resume production from 4 October 2021, but operations never restarted.

The Ratanpur Group is currently burdened with approximately Tk2,500 crore in defaulted loans from ten banks, resulting in 30 cases filed against it. Key individuals named in these lawsuits include Managing Director Maksudur Rahman, Chairman Shamsun Nahar Rahman, Yunus Bhaiya (the MD’s brother), sons Mizanur Rahman and Marzanur Rahman, and Md Alauddin, chairman of Modern Steel Mills Limited.

These challenges have led to shareholders being deprived of returns for years, with the company failing to declare any dividends. In an attempt to revive factory operations, MD Maksudur Rahman, along with his son Mizanur Rahman and wife Shamsun Nahar Rahman, sold their entire holdings in South Bangla Agriculture and Commerce Bank (SBAC) in January 2023.

In October 2023, the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) appointed four independent directors to RSRM. However, a BSEC official said these newly appointed directors have been unable to assume their roles due to internal complications within the company.

RSRM initially raised Tk100 crore from the capital market in 2014 by issuing 2.5 crore shares at Tk40 each, which included a Tk30 premium. According to the April 2024 shareholding report, the company’s sponsors and directors hold 29.93% of shares, falling short of the regulatory requirement of 30%. Institutional investors hold 34.08%, with the remaining 35.99% held by the general public.

The trustee of two close-ended mutual funds proposed converting them into open-ended funds upon maturity in December this year.

The funds — SEML Lecture Equity Management Fund and Vanguard AML BD Finance Mutual Fund One — overseen by Strategic Equity Management and Vanguard Asset Management will complete 10 years on December 23.

Asset managers say unitholders will be benefited in both ways – conversion or liquidation.

However, conversion is subject to unitholders’ approval and regulatory consent, according to the stock exchange filing on Sunday.

Bangladesh General Insurance, trustee of both funds, said asset managers had requested necessary measures to facilitate the conversion.

As per the latest amended mutual funds rules, close-ended funds must be redeemed on reaching maturity; no tenure extension will be allowed, a corrective move to change course from past mistakes.

However, such funds may get converted into open-ended funds if three-fourth unitholders, based on the percentage of ownership, give approval.

Asset managers will bear all expenses associated with the conversion process, as per the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission directive in this regard.

Mir Ariful Islam, managing director of Sandhani Asset Management, explained that redemption would allow unitholders to recover investments at the current net asset value (NAV) of the funds, a relief for them especially when units of listed mutual funds are trading at heavy discounts in the secondary market.

On the other hand, if these funds are converted into open-ended securities, unitholders will have options to keep investments or exit from the portfolios, he said.

Unitholders in that case may surrender open-ended fund units and the asset manager concerned will be obligated to liquidate the underlying assets of the surrendered units and pay cash back to investors at the current net asset value which is usually higher than the market price, he added.

Return on investments from Vanguard AML BD Finance MF One

Investors, who invested in 2016 and have held on to their holdings until redemption, will, however, have insignificant return on investments.

The fund distributed 2.0 per cent to 15 per cent cash dividends between 2016 and 2023. The net asset value (NAV) per unit is Tk 9.02 at present, which is 9.8 per cent lower than the face value.

Considering the dividend income and NAV, unitholder’s average annual return comes around 5.28 per cent until 2023, much lower than inflation during the period.

Return on investment from SEML Lecture Equity Fund

The fund distributed 2.5 per cent to 15 per cent cash dividends between 2016 and 2023. The net asset value (NAV) per unit is Tk 9.95 at present, slightly lower than the face value.

If the dividend income and NAV are taken into account, unitholder’s average annual return would be 5.15 per cent in the nine years until 2023.

If converted, these MFs will be the third and fourth close-ended funds to be converted into open-ended funds.

The trustee is yet to fix the unit holders’ meeting date. However, the trade suspension date was set on October 22 regarding unit holders’ meeting.

A close-ended fund is a collective investment scheme that pools money from a number of investors, usually for a decade, in order to be reinvested into stocks, bonds and other assets. Depending on the profits earned, investors are paid back in dividends.

Open-ended mutual funds are not listed in the stock market, but one can buy them from a fund manager’s office on the basis of its net asset value. Investors can sell off fund units at any time at prices based on its current net asset value.

বাংলাদেশ ও যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের মধ্যে আজ রোববার একটি সমঝোতা স্মারক (MoU) সই হয়েছে, যার মূল লক্ষ্য হলো দুই দেশের মধ্যকার বাণিজ্য ব্যবধান কমিয়ে আনা এবং দ্বিপক্ষীয় অর্থনৈতিক সম্পর্ক জোরদার করা।

এই সমঝোতা স্মারকের আওতায় বাংলাদেশ প্রথমবারের মতো যুক্তরাষ্ট্র থেকে সরকারি পর্যায়ে গম আমদানি করতে যাচ্ছে। এত দিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্র থেকে গম আসত শুধু সাহায্য হিসেবে। এবার বাংলাদেশ সরকার নিজ উদ্যোগে প্রাথমিকভাবে ২ লাখ ২০ হাজার টন গম কিনবে, যা দুই কনসাইনমেন্টে দেশে আসবে।

বাণিজ্য উপদেষ্টা শেখ বশিরউদ্দীন জানিয়েছেন, এই উদ্যোগের তিনটি লক্ষ্য রয়েছে—বাংলাদেশ-যুক্তরাষ্ট্র বাণিজ্য সম্প্রসারণ, বাংলাদেশের স্বার্থে আন্তর্জাতিক জনমত তৈরি এবং যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বাণিজ্য ঘাটতি কমানো।

তিনি আরও জানান, ভবিষ্যতে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র থেকে তুলা, ভোজ্যতেল, এলএনজি এবং উড়োজাহাজের যন্ত্রাংশ আমদানির পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে।

তবে অর্থনীতিবিদরা বলছেন, ডলার সংকটের সময়ে উচ্চ দামে গম আমদানির সিদ্ধান্ত ও অতিরিক্ত পণ্যে আগ্রহ দেখানোর আগে প্রয়োজন গভীর বিশ্লেষণ ও কৌশলগত চিন্তা। চুক্তির মেয়াদ ও শর্তাবলী বাংলাদেশের জন্য দীর্ঘমেয়াদে কতটা লাভজনক হবে, সেটিও বিবেচনায় আনা জরুরি।

এই চুক্তিকে দুই দেশের অর্থনৈতিক সম্পর্কের ক্ষেত্রে একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদক্ষেপ হিসেবে দেখা হলেও, বিশেষজ্ঞরা বলছেন—এ ধরনের উদ্যোগ যেন একক দিকনির্দেশনায় না গিয়ে বহুপাক্ষিক বাণিজ্যের ভারসাম্য বজায় রাখে।
